Part 2 - First Bicycle Tour 1200km, Germany to Norway..

Introduction.

I had set off on a bike journey to go to Oslo, Norway from Flensburg, Germany, and Here is the link to the first part. I don't ever travel like you would think. Most take trains or planes, or buses, and stay in hostels and buy food, and most are on a "limited period of time from work" to squeeze in many places they want to see before returning to the shackles. I have been traveling for 8 years, but the last 4 years I have slowed down even more than I already was. I travel slowly compared to others because I was always limited to the cash in my pocket (financially) and anyway was used to having no spare cash, even when I wasn't traveling, which was definitely much worse by far!

Being broke in society is just depressing. Being broke whilst in freedom, is inspiring.

Me - just now

It isn't though as glamorous as people say it is, to travel broke. Ok for some time it is, and sure it must be glamorous to do it as an "experience" when you know you have a safety net in the bank. Many hippies or punks have rich parent's but decide to travel broke and ask everything from generous people whilst saving the money mummy and daddy gives them each week or monthly - and this is very common. I believe I am the only one I have met long the way who travels with No Money ANYWHERE and it's my full time way of life, not just some year or 2 living alternative and free for fun - where I have the intention to "integrate back into society" at some point later. I live in the trust of life and I use "life hacks" that are frowned upon by society, like for food I go dumpster-diving. It's become so normal that I find it insane to go and buy things first. If I want tobacco, I play some songs. Everything else just works out.

I had found an empty hotel and one room was already forced open..

Things to do today whilst here at the hotel

  • Make a sign for busking ✓
  • Find a sewing kit ✗
  • Repair plastic water container , or chuck it. ✓

I just realized that nobody has been here since August 2015, which means I won't be disturbed! I will leave my thing here and go just with bike and guitar. In the barn I found a hand saw (sharp), paint and metal plate which can be used for a sign. Some rope some candle and firelighter, and a brand new right hand glove. Around the back is a boat and a Bbq grill, with a huge pile of coal :) !

I was in such luck to have found a room unlocked, well the door was busted anyhow. The weather was constant high winds, rain and storms. There were not many house's in the area it was open land, but there was a house opposite the room I was in with a lane between us. The second night I covered the wall with my huge tarp that had the windows on it because I really didn't want them to see lights on and then they would come and investigate and tell me to go put my tent up in the rain somewhere. I was completely amazed that the place was empty but each room had a flat screen still, beds, mattress's and even the duvets and pillows and the two classic chairs at the coffee table. The dogs were very happy and seemed to make a bed on some bedding in the bottom of the open wardrobe, which was luxury from the tent porch. The electric was on but there was no water. I would have liked a shower! I would have most likely just stayed at the hotel and got too comfortable, most definitely if there was also a bath tub.

I was cooking in the bathroom with the extractor fan on, on a little military cooker that cooks with burning tablets underneath. There were many boxes of fire lighters and so i took some and had plenty to cook on. Of course if it wasn't pissing it down and gale's outside I would love to have used the grill. It doesn't rain forever though..

19th April 2016 Diary Entry

12 hour's slept straight through!
Faarborg was way too stingy, but it paid for the bus fare. oh yeh I took a bus from the main road and I left the bike at the bus stop. I have so many coins anyway, and im sure we will get a few more soon.
its 6km away from the town and it cost 24kr on the bus which wasn't bad but then the bus driver on the way back charged 12kr each for the dog's. I did an hour at a supermarket but only got 50kr, the people weren't happy. But the container's were good, I just cooked Lamb Gulash and pasta on the grill outside, the weathers clearing up and I got a pot full to eat tomorrow. Tomorrows plan is to go to Svendborg and buy a camera. Well find somewhere to play guitar first to get the money for a camera!

In Faarborg it was very boring. There wasn't many people due to the weather I guess, but I did find a Redcross shop and went to look in their trash but couldn't find it (I don't support the redcross usually). I went in a asked if they had any second hand cameras so i had a rough idea on a price, but after some language barriers they came back with some relic camera from 1960 something..
I did though get a pair of sunglasses that would help me and a sun hat which I would be needing - I saw a weather forecast on a newspaper on the street , and the next 5 days would be just sunshine! I can't remember how but 2 Spanish women brought me lunch at the cafe next to the red cross shop, and we sat and ate baguettes outside on a picnic table in the sun. I had a new colourful sign, maybe it was a bit big, that I had painted on with the metal paint in the barn. "Traveling carpenter going to Oslo, Thanks for your donations." in terrible Danish. I used a dictionary to translate and so you can only guess how that turned out!

No water, no WC? How did you solve that problem?

I had toilet paper :)
And I soon learnt that the water in Scandinavia is drinkable from streams :) plus knocking on houses in the middle of the country side, even just using their tap if they didnt answer the door lol

Drinking water from the streams in Norway is one thing ... but in Denmark, that's a difference. Denmark is completely flat and with lots of farm land. In general, not a good idea to drink water from rivers and streams that are going through farmland ...

First time I met my wife, back in 1998 ... she reached out to me as I had an ad offering hospitality on the Internet, but she also had two friends along, they slept in Frognerparken (more well-known as "the Vigeland park" among tourists) and was drinking the water from the stream there. Now, that's a very urban stream, it's coming from Sognsvann, a relatievely small lake, and also one of the most popular bathing lakes in Oslo ... and then passing lots of roads and gardens on the way down to Frognerparken. I think I did drink one cup of coffee, though I somehow don't think it's much healthy.

I did boil the water if it wasn't coming out from a spring in the ground :) I have quite a strong stomach for water luckily anyway, when I went to west africa I was drinking from the wells and the locals were surprised I didn't get the shits!
