Is it possible to practice yoga during menstruation: 5 tips

Women who practice yoga, the question arises:
Can I practice yoga during menstruation?
Some recommend a list of asanas that need to be excluded, others offer selective asanas that can be included in the practice. There is no consensus on this issue.
As I am a woman myself, and I have experience of yoga for more than 15 years, I dare to share my opinion on this matter.

At the initial stage of the practice, I knew the recommendations that VS Boyko presented in his book "The Yoga of the Art of Communications." In it he advised, if necessary, the performance of asanas, only sedentary, meditative, relaxing. And what was my surprise, when I could hardly carry out these recommendations. As it turned out later, any new prescription, "stumbles" on resistance within us in the form of any personal idea of ​​how "should be". So it happened with me, I had my own arguments for the proposed recommendations, so as not to fulfill them. Here are some of them:

  • The more practice, the better for the body.
  • Women never cared about themselves. There is a Russian saying about a woman: "A woman can stop a running horse.
    The woman will enter the burning hut. "
  • Yes, well, nothing will happen ....
    With time, practicing, I noticed that during periods of the menstrual cycle, the body resisted practice, there was fatigue. There was a simple desire to do nothing. Finally, a year or a year and a half later, after reading the recommendations, I realized that it is usually not recommended to practice in full and only if necessary, meditative asanas.
    Leaving my idea "necessary", I began to listen more to my body, and in critical days I did not practice at all.
    These days it is very pleasant to leave all my everyday affairs and devote them to your personal rest, your personal space. This method of alternation was very useful for overall health and well-being. Sometimes there is a desire to plunge into yourself, listen to deeper layers of your psyche to catch these subtle rhythms inside our body that are not audible in the usual situation. I take one of the simple poses and listen to myself ....
    After such a good rest, which takes 2-3 days, on ordinary days, yoga becomes a joy, the body is filled with strength. For myself, I came to a productive conclusion: "Everything has its time."
    Summing up, five tips turned out:
  1. Listen to your body during the period of menstruation: does your body really want to strain, or is this inner attitude causing you to act.
  2. Allow yourself to rest, relax.
  3. Listen to your inner state, you can catch relaxation and peace, enjoy this natural moment.
  4. Series of inadmissible asanas:
    All power and "standing" poses, intense twisting, deflections back and inverted positions.
  5. But if all the same you want to do yoga, then here is a series of acceptable asanas:
