Tamales are my favorite food! I live in a town with a lot of authentic Mexican restaurants and that's what I order the most.

Haha. It awakened my appetite. Had some homemade bread with lots of butter, orcanic pickles and ... yes. ketchup. Strange stuff I must admit. I must have been too hungry to stay sane.
That sounds pretty decent. Even the ketchup, why not? Whatever's your secret pleasure. As for the strange stuff, nothing can be too strange if it tastes delicious. For me, for example, I love to eat my peanut-butter sandwitches with agave syrup. Together they are unbeatable, though you gotta stir them a bit together, as the agave syrup is a bit runny.
I have eaten tamales in many Central American countries and I would say the best I have had are in Mexico followed by the Nica Tamales in Nicaragua. The fillings seem to vary but the general nature is the same. I love the family made ones the best because they are made with love!

That's sooo hard to say, I don't know. A small, torn piece of hand-made tortilla would beat any high-end meal form a fancy-schmanz restaurant. But you know what? There is one thing I'd gladly call my favorite. My wife's uncle makes Cochinita Pibil like no one else. In fact, I should write an article about it, especially since he just re-opened his eatery on christmas eve. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hehe you're welcome. Would you say quesadillas (the uber cheesy seemingly overly Americanized ones ) are authentic? I Always wondered if the quesadillas would be as cheesy somewhere with really authentic Mexican food
Oh they are! Mexicans LOVE their cheese. If you make them with cheese and ham, they are called a 'sincronizada'. But they are made with everything from meats to veggies (squash flowers are superb), with and without cheese. They may be fried (asadas) or deep-fried (doradas). I haven't dedicated them their own post, but may make up for it... soon...

I am going to check with my wife. I think they have something similar in Chile but with a different name.
Oh, you have to try them some day! I just took a glance at Wikipedia (prompted by @ecoinstant's mention of the tamales tolimenses) and it seems like most Latin American countries have their own varieties. Though Chile is not listed, I would be surprised if they didn't have tamales! Makes me want to go on a tamal-world-tour!
Nice! The Colombian tamal (and we are from Tolima and have way better tamales than those boring Bogotanos) has chicken, pork, and beef, half an egg, a carrot slice or two, and rice mixed in with the corn masa.

That is awesome! I never heard anyone put eggs or carrots in tamales, and I was even gonna mention something along the lines of "unused ingredients" in this post. But it seems like they are not unused after all, just regional. Thanx for the additional info!
