Do not eat while watching TV

in #food6 years ago

... especially if you are trying to lose weight.

You probably find this advice foolish, impractical, and even illogical. In fact, however, it is not, and if you want to know how, with a little change, you can improve your eating habits, keep reading.

What will you learn from this post-

  • What is the relation between nutrition, television and appetite?
  •  How distraction factors influence not only during the meal. but also hours later.
  •  How can we innocently increase our caloric intake; Practical tips for small, but long-term paying habits.

I recommended not watching TV while eating. This will help you eat slower and give enough time for signals to reach the brain.

Today we will look closely at the relationship between eating and watching TV and why the two things are not good to combine together, especially if we are aiming to lose weight.

The environment and appetite.

If we talk about the relationship between the environment and the choices we make in terms of nutrition, you will come across many factors.
Among them are: the abundance of foods, the speed of eating, the people we sit with at a table, whether we know them or not.

Although some of these factors make us eat less, such as a romantic encounter with a representative of the opposite sex, in most cases the opposite is true - we eat more, often unconscious and unnecessary.

The TV is no exception.

Watching TV and eating

Once I mentioned the slow eating, it's not hard to guess why we can consume more food unconsciously while watching TV - our minds are busy watching the screen, we're not focusing on food, swallowing it fast, not chewing well and feeling, that we are full, while we already ate too much.

But does it influence of the TV stops here? What happens 2-3 hours later?

The social studies

Participants and essence of the study

The study, which we will look at today, was attended by 16 young women (average age 19 years).

The study consisted of two stages, each of which was under certain conditions.

The participants had to do 2 controlled lunches, with a distance of 2 days between them.

At the first controlled lunch they had to watch a 10-minute video clip and at the second lunch TV was removed.

Half of the women started first with lunch + TV, and the other half - with a lunch without TV.

The video was of a comedic character - popular and liked by people, so the participants were more likely to be distracted from their lunch.

After each lunch, the participants were asked questions about how well they remember lunch, how they felt, having to appreciate their mood and appetite with a number between 1 (low) and 100 (high).

Questions concerned hunger, satisfaction, sadness, joy, irritation, calm of mind.

The participants had to return in 2 hours and half, and they should not have eaten and drunk for that period.

When they returned, they were offered a variety of cookies, and they also had to describe how clearly they remember the lunch consumed by them only two and a half hours earlier.

Purpose of the experiment

The main idea of the experiment was to determine how many biscuits the participants would eat after (not) watching TV during their lunch.  It is known that we usually eat more while watching TV, but in this study we wanted to find out whether this effect of television continued even hours after that.

Results

After watching a TV-controlled lunch, the participants ate more biscuits after this lunch, compared to the group that did not watch TV.
The group that had a controlled launch+TV also did not remember very well what they ate, because their attention was focused on the comedy movie, not on the lunch.

Advices

  • Do not watch TV, talk on the phone, play games, do not surf the web while you eat.
  • Focus on this on your plate and enjoy it, eating slowly and chewing well. You will feel full for a longer time after that and will reduce the intake of snacks.
  • If you want to lose weight, take my advice - it certainly will not hurt, you will feel the difference and make your own conclusions.

And now! Let me ask, but I want to clarify that cookies in return for your answers will not be there!

Do you remember your last 5 meals?
How many of them you ate in a relaxed setting, enjoying the food?
How many of them you ate while watching TV, reading a newspaper / magazine, writing to a friend on social networks, talking on the phone, and so on?
What are your thoughts on the topic and do you think you need to change habits?

Great advice but probably hard for most to stick to. Seems like these days everyone is trying to do 3 things at once lol
I came by because you were featured by @aggamun in this weeks pay it forward curation contest

There are so many factors regarding weight gain and weight loss. But mindless eating is definitely a huge thing. I should remind my husband of his habit of snacking frequently while watching on the computer. I should remember this more often while I'm working on my writing.

Great post! I found you because @aggamun featured you in the Pay it Forward Curation Contest this week. Keep up the great work!

Well.. last 5 meals? A chips called krambak about 50 grams while watching the news and a glass of lemon infused water, some cigarettes then I ate mango salsa and raspberries while playing the steemmonsters last night, 30 minutes after that I ate rice and eggplant's sautee and taking one more lemon infused water before I went to bed.

Different culture and different social background should add as one of the research consideration IMO. Thanks for sharing @smartintravels 😊 found your post through @aggamun entry post in the pay it forward contest this week
