Simple grocery store gardening trick #1
This can be a really great project for you and your young family members to learn about plants and gardening. It would also be great for a classroom, if you use a glass pot make sure to put rocks in the bottom and be careful to not over water it. It will allow you to see the onions roots as it grows in your windowsill, and to monitor your watering.(go slow :))
Tonight I shot some video for a cooking lesson I will be publishing soon. One of the things I like to have is fresh green onion tops added as an attractive and crunchy garnish. My family really likes onion so I use a whole one in this recipe and just plant the green onions in some potting soil to regrow the shoots. Next I plan to harden them off in the weeks to come and then plant them outside to see how large I can get them. Not sure if they will grow into full bulb onions or just stay as they are. I now have three pots made from supper leftovers and I won't need to buy any more shoots for a while now!
Its likely the original plants came in contact with pesticides but from here on out they will be much healthier. It doesn't take long to go from the first photo to the growth seen in the second, maybe 2 weeks. These are under some really small fluorescent tube lights next to my washing machine under the stairs to give you an idea of how cramped this space is. If you have the space 4ft bulbs are much more economical and you can start tons more seeds that way.
If you know a few gardeners in your area it can be a really good thing to grow everyone's transplants in a club. One person grows all the tomatoes under their lights, one person grows all the peppers, one person does all marigolds, Tomatillo, etc. You can grow better when you are growing a canopy of all similar size and type plants. You will also have the benefit that feeding and watering schedules are tailored to that one kind of plant not several. I wish I had that many gardening friends in my area here, maybe that's what is wrong with this world. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!
