Food Trucks Fight For The Freedom To Compete

in #food6 years ago

The food truck industry is estimated to be worth more than $800 million dollars in the U.S. alone, with thousands of food trucks that can be found scattered in various states around the country.

The food truck trend has enticed many to not only grab a bite to eat from these mobile restaurants but it's also drawn many to give up a myriad of careers in order to follow their culinary dreams.

Food trucks offer a much more cost-friendly option for someone who might want to share their catering and cooking skills with the world and social media today can really help these different trucks to gain quite a dedicated following of consumers.

States with the highest prevalence of food trucks are regions like California, New York, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

The rules surrounding food truck activity can be quite restrictive, determining how many trucks can be selling, where they can sell, and so on. And some food truck owners in North Carolina are fighting back, for the freedom to sell from their food trucks. Specifically, in the region of Carolina Beach, food truck owners say that authorities have passed unfair and unconstitutional ordinances relating to their work.

What did authorities do?

They banned food trucks a few months ago, for anyone that has not previously owned a brick-and-mortar style restaurant in the town that they are working in, for more than a year.

So if you're interested in hiring someone who has a great food truck service in Carolina Beach, to cater to your specific event, they could ultimately be locked in a cage or they could lose their life, over this ordinance that says they are not allowed to serve willing consumers.

With the new rules in place, that means that there are dozens of different food truck companies that will be prohibited from operating and that means that this ordinance is going to drastically reduce competition in the area.

The mayor of the region, Mr. Benson, has suggested that the town has yet to review the complaints relating to the changes.

For now, a lawsuit has been launched against the Carolina Beach town; food truck owners say that the new ordinance is discriminatory against their own business.

The people should be the ones who decide which businesses succeed or fail, by voting with their dollars to support it, the determination of success shouldn't be left up to the government to decide.

Together, the owners of at least 3 different food trucks have teamed up for this lawsuit, and they are arguing that these rules violate the North Carolina constitution. Not only that, but that they will effectively prevent dozens of food truck companies from being able to operate peacefully in the vicinity of Carolina Beach.

I think that food trucks are great! There are starting to be more of them in my town. I see it as a sign of the changing times when it comes to business. A restaurant is extremely expensive with overhead costs. While there are still significant expenses with food trucks, they are nowhere near as prohibitive as the costs of a physical restaurant building and staff.

My neighbor owns a food truck and that's her full time work. It's a great opportunity for people who are independent, like food and work hard.

I have a dream....
that one day....
food trucks and ice cream trucks may be seen as equal...
that when I hear salsa music blaring down the street, I know to go outside and get tacos from the mobile taco truck.

This is not fair! Food trucks are an amazing opportunity for people with excellent cooking skills who doesn't have the money to have a proper restaurant! They're trying to succed in life and authorities always making hard to accomplish their dreams.

I totally agree with the truck owners, that it should be up to public/customers/people to decide which business is great and which ones are not.
This new law is a discrimination and again all about the power.
I think more truck owners should team up and fight back.

I do not agree that does not allow those people who have that art or gift to cook and do it in trucks and more if they have all their papers in order and keep it in good condition, since many do not have to set up a restaurant I think it's unfair

Nice blog. And you captured nice pictures.

Its a laughable ordinance and it is silly but really hurtful for people who just want to earn money honestly. @doitvoluntarily maybe the big restaurant owners and fast food chains are behind this using politicians to kill the competition for the favor of their selfish interests.

@doitvoluntarily I do not think it's good to prohibit trucks to sell food, if they comply with all the procedures of habilitation and health, would have to let them sell
Thank you very much for sharing this news
