The Dream

Flash Fiction Crime story written exclusively for #Steemit

Flash Fiction Crime Story by Meredith Loughran and written exclusively for Steemit.com

It started on a bright, beautiful day. Megan woke up with a wonderful sense that her life was going to turn around...be different. Perhaps it was a dream that gave her the feeling of euphoria.

She dreamt of flying free as a bird in a beautiful blood red evening sky. It was, after all, her favorite color in the whole world. The household was quiet as she made her way down the steps to fetch a fresh cup of coffee. She absolutely loved the programmable coffee maker her husband had bought her for Christmas.

The clock read 6:30 AM. Excellent - I'm going to get so much done today! she thought.

Finishing her first cup, she topped off again and decided she was going to treat everyone to an amazing breakfast of waffles and eggs. Humming a jaunty little tune, she got to work with the batter. The birds chirped happily in the still dark morning. Yes, it's going to be a wonderful day.

Making quick work of breakfast and setting the table for her husband and two daughters, she smiled as she quietly made her way up the stairs again. And again, she felt that feeling of freedom and euphoria. Sneaking into the bedroom, she saw her husband, Michael sleeping so quietly. Not really wanting to disturb him, she kissed him gently on the forehead, admiring his long eyelashes; his hair mussed on one side.

She left the room to check on the girls. They too were sleeping quietly - a rare occurrence especially on the weekend when the adults were allowed to sleep in. She whispered, "I love you," in their ears and watched them sleep. Their skin, so young and unmarked looked like porcelain dolls.

Humming a light tune, she began to pick up the toys scattered about the room...and her world went red again.

Wait, she thought, Am I dreaming that I'm awake?"

The sun broke over the horizon and she could see that the walls looked as if someone took a dripping paint brush and splattered it all over the place. The arcs and spots were mesmerizing. Megan looked down at her hands. They too were red. Her world tilted on its axis. She turned to see the girls sleeping, their white coverlets completely red.

NO

Tripping over her own feet, she neared the girls again. Her hands shook as she caressed their hair. COLD They were so cold! Something was terribly, terribly wrong.

"Michael?!" she called, not recognizing the high pitch of her own voice. "MICHAEL!"

Running to her bedroom to shake him awake, she noticed he too was covered in red and cold to the touch.

"Oh my god..."

Her entire body shook to the very depths of her soul.

As if she was floating above her own body, she numbly walked back down the stairs, following the red footsteps toward the phone. The receiver had a distinct hand print on it. Strange flashing lights distracted her outside the kitchen window.

Had someone already called the police?

"Put down the knife! PUT DOWN THE KNIFE!" one officer shouted, pointing a gun at her.

"What are you doing in my house?" she asked, but her voice was so far away, as if she were in a deep well. This has to be a dream. A crazy dream!

"Dammit, I said put down the knife!"

Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. As if by magic, she held tight to a long kitchen knife. Fascinated, she watched a drop of blood pool then drop to the floor. But parts of the knife seemed to have dried chunks of red caking it.

"I didn't do this," she whispered more to herself than anyone. "This isn't real."

The officer's radio crackled, "Three dead upstairs: a male and two children."

"I didn't do this!" She yelled. "It's supposed to be a beautiful day! I'm FREE!"

And then her world went from red to black.

The End

Nice story, Meredith. Glad to see some other genres on Steemit - have followed you. I have also written some crime stuff, and have an ongoing series on Steemit, The Horse Van (Part 1 Part 2).

Have you seen any other crime-type, or just non-sci-fi, writing that you've liked? Nothing against sci-fi (which I really like), I'm just trying to do a bit of curation around less popular subjects so that stuff like this doesn't get lost.

Hi @sunjata - I really appreciate that! I haven't seen a lot of other fiction writing but I'm following you back to see if we can't make a joint effort in the search.

Great - thanks!

keep the pace. i will be back to read it.

I love it... You have a new follower. You have a gift. :)

Thank you @peacekeeper - that is music to my ears. Have a great weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing your blog as well. :)
