Capsule Film Review: Apollo 13 (1995)
1995 epic Apollo 13 reconstructs one of the most exciting episodes in the history of US space programe. In April 1970, after the successful completion of Moon landing, NASA launches another mission to the Moon that would go disastrously wrong and leave three astronauts stranded in dark, cold and unforgiving space. The crew, aided by Houston mission control, however, uses ingenuity and their shoestring resources to plot return home. Made for the 25th anniversary of the event and based on the book by mission commander Jim Lovell, Apollo 13, at least for the most part, evades cheap propaganda and instead delivers realistic yet spectacular story about space exploration and triumph of human spirit. Tom Hanks in the role of Lovell is good, but far from high Oscar-winning standards.
