Journeys Prologue p2
When the seventh day came around, the child's father, Rale Shepherd, helped his wife with his son. "Mary, do you think we should be taking him to the Father so soon?" If truth be known, he felt protective of his son.
The mother looked up, her blue eyes sparkling, and said, "Yes, you know it's the way things are done."
"Aye," Rale intoned with a small roll of his eyes. "On the seventh day, after birth, the baby must be taken to the Father to be blessed, or the fairies will come and get him." The sarcasm was evident in his voice. "But, if you're sure, let me get the wagon ready."
Mary pulled the baby away from her breast, closed her blouse, and smiled. Looking at her, Rale thought about how lucky he was to have her for a wife. She was a tall, beautiful woman with flaming red hair and green eyes. It was a match made in heaven, because Rale too, was tall, like his father and his grandfather. Unlike his wife, he had brown hair and blue eyes.
He was brought back to reality by a thin cry, and looked down to see his son staring back at him. Is he reaching out? It certainly appeared so, with the tiny hands reaching towards his father. "Come here, my boy." He whispered in happiness as he lifted his son up and smiled. "Nah, wouldn't want the fae to come and get you, would we?"
After helping his wife into the wagon. Rale started toward the thriving city that was crossroads.
