The Lake of Memories (An Original Short Story)

Shae looked at the girl holding her breath under water and sad memories flooded her mind.

“Shae! Stay in the boat.” Her mother had cried to her as she jumped into the lake. Shae didn’t listen. She could sense the danger coming. Father had told her to abandon the boat before they arrived the shore. She had shared that with everyone but no one cared to listen to a thirteen years old girl. The men in the other boats had assured them that they were out of harm’s reach. “Out of harm’s reach,” if only they knew what was coming.

It had been at this very lake where rebel soldiers had suddenly appeared. Satina had held her breath under water for twenty minutes. Twenty minutes of listening to the grunts of slain men, muffled sounds of raped women and cries of children.

She looked at her daughter playing with her husband playing in the lake. It was also at this very lake where she met her love and hero and husband. At the young age of fifteen, he was her perfect knight in shinning armour. He had ridden with his father to come to their rescue.

No! She chooses to remember the lake for the good and not the evil.
