#16:A New World

Lamar Pedernales,former Captain (both types), former engineer (both types), former college professor and medical doctor ....burst forth into a new world, riding upon a Buffalo named Jeb. They were running hard. He was leading a combined wagon train of civilians, government contractors and military. He and the others were blinking their eyes furiously while frantically trying to shake off the effects of a bright flash of light when.

..........they suddenly found themselves in the midst of a stampede. They were among huge blowing, panting cattle that were larger than Texas LongHorns.

The humans and their wagons were moving with the herd of stampeding animals so they were OK for the moment. They’d best not stumble or fall. That would assure being fatally trampled.

Others were running among the rampaging cattle. Lamar saw bears, large flightless birds and two different types of wagons. One set of wagons was being pulled by Buffalo very similar to Jeb, the other were being pulled by Rhinoceros.

That startled Lamar more than the big birds did. Lamar had been to Africa and had seen Ostriches and Rhino and couldn’t recollect ever having seen a rhino harnessed. He’d seen ostriches being ridden but not Rhinos. He was even more startled when he saw that both were being controlled by monsters. The word ‘Orc” came immediately to mind for the monsters that were driving the wagons. Lamar had never seen an Orc but these guys looked just like what an Orc should look like. By comparison it was almost natural to see the small children riding the Bears the Buffalo, and the low flying Griffins. Lamar didn’t really want to think about Griffins just yet.

Lamar wondered if that bright light in the tunnel had hurt his vision . His sight began to clear and transit shock began to wear off. His critical facilities came back online. He couldn’t have seen what he thought he’d seen. It was impossible.

Yes he had and they were fighting.

The children were in a running fight with the Orcs..and the other smaller monsters. Lamar immediately thought of them as Demons.

The Demons that were riding the evil looking birds had side arms. There were Demons in the wagons being pulled by the Rhinos too. The wagons were two wheeled and could actually be called heavy chariots. Orcs were driving the chariots which each had rail mounted pintle guns manned by demons. There were two of the of the heavy guns, one on each side rail. The ButcherBird riding Demons and the Chariot riding Demons were both shooting at the bounding bears and swooping Griffins…... and missing. The Demons were really bad shots. They didn't seem to be hitting anything. They were that poorly trained. Those certainly were nice guns though. Lamar very much wanted a gun like that.

The children, however, were experts. They used their weapons to lethal effect. Lamar noticed as a bear-rider attacked an enemy chariot from the rear. The bear was running much faster than the big cart was moving as it’s rider aimed a crossbow and shot. The bolt sped true to it mark and took out one of the gunners. The other gunner was immediately skewered by the Bear-Rider’s lance. If the Demons gunners were Orcs then the chariot driver was a Troll. It had no weapon though and wasn’t acting aggressive, it was just driving.

The bear paced the chariot for a minute. It’s rider held a crossbow at the ready. He was studying the Troll. The Troll didn’t look all that bad actually, it was just big and ugly. The Orcs, by comparison, exuded evil. Apparently the Bear-Rider saw something that Lamar didn't and decided to spare the Troll. The Bear leaped forward and bounded off out of sight.

Lamar was fascinated. Bears, Buffalo, Griffins, Orcs, and Trolls? Rhinos pulling Chariots and children riding Buffalo? ...what next?

What next was that he fell out of the saddle.
