Chapter 67: Roy Was Right

.......................................................................................................................................................................................

Roy Was Right
Again.

He seemed to make a habit of being right Shaniqua realized. She hadn’t seen anything yet. Not in her whole life had she seen anything like what was spread out before her.

“I’ve been in airplanes before, many times” she breathed " but it’s not the same. This is magnificent.”

They were hundreds of feet above the top of the cell tower.

“The only thing I know of that might compare would be gliding or ballooning. " Sally said "I’ve never done either.

“I have” Shaniqua said.” It’s not the same. The ballon has that annoying burner sound. The gliders are enclosed and you’re looking thru plastic. The closest might be a hang glider, but it has that ugly wing overhead.”

She gazed around. It was as if they were walking on air. They were inside of an almost optically clear bubble formed at the top where the tubular arches joined.

“It’s safer than church up here.” Roy told her. "We couldn’t be blown out of here by a tornado.”

“He knows from experience” Sally said. "He scared me to death that night.”

“It was either stay in place or come down on the escalator. That would have been ok but staying here was better. Kyle and I had an awesome experience” Roy defended himself.

Shaniqua looked at him in awe...

“He’s not kidding” Sally said. "Boys!”

“It was only an F-3” Roy said with a grin.

“ONLY?” Shaniqua was astonished.” that’s 200 miles per hour winds!”

“I think it was really and F-4” Sally said. "He likes to downplay things. I, the children, and half the county were in the restaurant. It was Fight Night and there was a big crowd. It was just winding down when we got word of twister on the ground heading our way. Someone’s kid, not ours, wanted to see a tornado close up. He took the escalator. He was half way up before it’s mother realized what had happened. She became hysterical. Roy came up here to fetch the little brat.”

“I’d just got here when the tornado went right over you” Roy said " So Kyle, the little boy, and I stayed and watched the whole thing.”

“It messed up some cars for sure” Sally recalled. Tossed them around like dice.”

“Boats too.” Roy said " some of the swamp rats don’t own cars. They come in boats.”

After that any time bad weather shows up...so does everyone for miles around. Our place is tornado proof.” Sally said.

“We have beer too.” Roy said "Don’t forget that part.”

“Some of our most profitable nights are when tornado’s are dancing around.” Sally said.

“And floods” Roy reminded her.”This area floods real regular like. That’s why we built it so high above water level.”

He pointed down at the barely seen building far below. Fog was rolling in.

Shaniqua stared and stared at everything in awe, then noticed the fog. Soon everything below them was covered. They floated above the clouds.

She watched a beautiful sunset, and a glorious moon rise.

She hated to leave.

When Shaniqua returned to her office that night she spiked the story. She didn’t feel right about telling the whole world about the little bit of paradise that she had found. She’d informed Sally and Roy of her intention before she left.

They were pleased.
