FICTION - Julia's secret - CHAPTER 5

in #fiction7 years ago

At first, Julia thought that she was dreaming. Within just a few seconds, while trying to get her thoughts in order, Julia remembered how her grandmother caught her drunk at home with her friends, but she was seventeen then, not thirteen.

"Kate! What are you doing?" I'm shocked!" Julia said while taking the bottle of whiskey from Kates hand.

Kate started laughing. She wasn't at all stable on her feet and needed the wall as support. "Why mom? Why are you shocked?" she said, laughing uncontrollably.

Julia closed the door as she didn't want the neighbours to hear what was going on. She knew that Kate wasn't in a state to talk sense so she didn't even bother answering her question. With the Whishey bottle in her one hand, she slipped her other hand in below Kate's arm and helped her to the kitchen. A strange smell caught her attention and as she entered the kitchen, she knew exactly what it was.

"Tom! Are you crazy?" Julia said shocked.

The music was too loud for Tom to hear her. He was in the kitchen facing the other side. In only his underpants, he danced to the beat of the song that was playing. Empty liquor bottles lay on the kitchen counter and there were a few empty used shot glasses standing around. He has been baking as there were cake pans in the sink. Half eaten weed cookies and crumbs were seen in the corner. Julia knew exactly what it was because Tom used to make it for them when they were dating.

Julia rushed to the CD player and switched it off. Dead silence hung like a cloud over the kitchen. She was the center of attention and all eyes were on her.

"What the hell Tom? She is thirteen years old!"

Blood boiled inside Julia's head. Whenever she became really angry, that was the way she felt - as if she could literally hear the blood boiling in her ears. Mostly, whenever that happened, nothing good came of it. She learned from a very young age to pretend and that when the doors are closed behind you, it's okay to flip out. She often thought back to the days when she lived with her mother and wondered if she had the same temperament as her.

Tom just pulled his shoulders up and didn't bother to say anything. He signalled to Kate to go and stand next to him and then casually placed three glasses on the counter. From below the counter, he took out the bottle of Scotch which belonged to Julia's grandfather. It must have been over 30 years old.

Tom opened the bottle and then turned to Kate and said: "Katie, your mother asked me to do something fun with you today..."

"I didn't say..." said Julia before she was interrupted.

"Shhh woman!" Tom muted her before continuing his conversation with Kate. "Katie, did we have fun today?"

Kate's eyes were red and puffy and although she looked very tired, she started to giggle with a reply. "Tom Cat, we had super duper fun today!"

Tom looked very pleased with himself as he handed Julia a glass of Scotch. Julia didn't decline and swallowed the contents down in one go.

"Whoooo mom! You've got skill! You go girl..." said a chirpy Kate and just as she wanted to start clapping her hands, Julia stopped her and in a very calm voice, said: "Okay, you've had your fun. Now it's my turn!" and with that, she took the bottle from Tom, smiling.
