Third Wheel Coming - Finish the Story Contest

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

Priest from Scotland was approach by young man named Vito, who wanted to buy and old fortress on the banks Northern sea, just a little north of Dundee. The fortress was magnificent, filled with history and it was quite huge, fitting to be a city. Priest conveyed with other important people of his order and explained them how young Vito earned a fortune on the new hype called cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin, so he decided to fulfill his childish dream to own a fortress like his favorite characters from history novels. The order can’t sustain the property and it has been draining their budget for quite some time, so the final decision was to sell.

Vito was delighted with the acquisition, but before he throws a huge party in the courtyard of his fortress he wanted to admire it for a while. Wandering through the premises and long hallways with celling high above him, he planned how to renovate old furniture keeping everything just as it is now because everything was perfect to him. Entering the main hall he was astonished, he filled the room with history characters and imagined them having dinner after a victory in some campaign. One wall covered with shelves filled with dusty books and scrolls caught his eye. He approached it carefully and read the labels on the shelves. It seemed that some books dated from Dark ages, he was full of joy and happiness, he felt like his heart will explode of all the excitement.

Looking further Vito found a shelve labeled with “________ Heavenly incident”, and one of the scrolls significantly differs from others. He opened it and saw that it was written in Latin. In high school Vito learned Latin, but the language is dead, also he didn’t have a chance to practice so he got rusty. But that didn’t stop him, his curiosity was stronger than unfamiliar language and he had offline translator on his smart phone as helper.

He translated and transcribed, what was written on a scroll, on a clean paper. Some parts of the scroll were damaged and couldn’t be read, but the rest of it Vito managed to save.
The transcript reads:

These are the words of Sigurd Red Beard also known as William II Rufus, son of Ulfric Red Beard also known as William the Conqueror.
It was 1495 in ____ ____ England. My father led __ army on a raid to catholic ___ __ gland. All of the men were filled with lust for gold and ___shed. Facing the Catholics we wanted _____ ____ as soon as possible. Suddenly the skies opened and the Odin _____ _____. With storming voice he called out my father, Ulfric Red Beard, and said “From __ __ ___ ___ called William, William the Conqueror! Come with me to make the last ___quest of England. Choose one of your men and one of the Catholics to acco____ you.” My father knew, when Odin calls for you ____ __ no hesitation. He chose me and Priest of Durham who became one of the most loyal friends of me and my father while we ruled the England.
This translation _ ___ _ _ ___ of Durham as High priest  ____ _____ _____ 1111 AD.

Vito mailed the picture of the transcript to me, so I can win the “Finish the story contest” hosted by @f3nix where you have to finish the script. This week script was written by @cyemela, one of the most consistent contestants, and it can be found: https://steemit.com/contest/@f3nix/finish-the-story-contest-week-17

Ha ha. I particularly like the way you made the scroll incomplete or damaged so that we the reader had to partly puzzle out or complete the account in our mind. Clever technique :-)

A historical MadLib!

That's a great take on this. Say hi to Vito for me. Must be destiny ; ) Cool how all these stories can relate in a Shintiara timeline. Any time; any place.

Crazy coincidence that you wrote beginning of the story and he found the piece about what you wrote. I'm a lucky guy :)
All jokes aside, I felt a little nostalgic for Shintiara and timelines that can change. So I planted our main character as a important figure of his past. Also Willim the Conqueror has Viking routes, from those who settled in Normandy, and his son William II Rufus got the name Rufus because of his red hair and beard if I'm correct, so it all adds up.

There's a little Vito in each one of us! Surely one of my dreams, when (not if) we will be obscenely rich due to the crypto success, would be to have such a fortress. I enjoyed the adventurous and original spirit of your story, especially the scroll idea!

Interesting post I like it

Yay! Time travel! This would be a perfect Shintiara plot (Shintiara is the role-playing game I co-wrote and that is about time paradoxes) :D

Oooo I know what Shintiara is :) :) :)
It's the reason I started participating in this contest !
