Baby Great Blue Herons
Fledglings, that's the proper term. Birds who have just learned to fly. They're cute and perhaps a little dumb at this stage...
I took these photos today. The final batch of blue herons are down from their treetop nests and they're flying around... and standing around, and allowing me to get way too close frankly. I don't think they've figured out what humans are at this stage.
Trying not to put any pressure on the birds, I stand back a few yards. Eventually, this bird has had enough of the camera and flies over to a small island in the pond.
I wait a long time while the bird practices fishing. It's a branch or a bubble every time. No fish.
There are fish in this pond and I've watched adult birds catch them many times. Not this little fledgling though. Seems happy enough however, wouldn't you say?
I believe these last two shots are also babies. When the adults fly they always seem to be on a mission. They fly away in a straight line and disappear. Later, they will return with a fish, or a branch for the nest. There seems to be some purpose behind what they do.
Not these guys however. They were just flying around in lazy circles, going nowhere. Just having fun!

That's so nice, I appreciate your support! Thank you!
Too cute, and I bet your observations are spot on! Even the songbird fledlings go though that dumb phase. Might be some truth to the saying 'only the strong survive'. Your photos are wonderful!
Thanks so much, Melinda! Yes, it looks that way to me, they are completely inexperienced and seem unafraid... which is pretty much how the ducks and geese in the park act.

Thank you, @esteemapp!
Those are fabulous! I have never seen the young ones up close before. So cool!
Thanks very much, @goat-girlz!
Beautiful and inspiring images, I love the third, the bird seems suspended in the air.
Thanks a lot, glad you liked the photos!
Great photos as always. I did not know the baby birds are called fledglings, but now I do. :-)
Really? I knew it, but had to double-check the spelling :-)
Well, I called them little birdies LOL.
Great and beautiful pictures you took. Seems like the birds were not aware of you taking their pictures
Thanks very much. The birds ignored me unless I got too close. I try to stand back a little and use a zoom lens.
Launching out the water young heron looks like it is on a trampoline going up.
Watching young fledglings learning, an entertaining pastime with amazing photography.
Thank you, it is very entertaining!
Fabulous fledgling shots @keithboone and I love the different angles showcasing their impressive feathers and wingspan. That photo with the side view is fantastic and if that is not a bird smile.......I'll eat my hat. 😊 👒
Wonderful in flight captures as well, which makes this another Bonza Boone Blog! ( U & R )
