'Notorious' - The Ship.
The Notorious was docked at the Scarborough Marina over the weekend so I wandered down to take a look. The school holidays have just begun so it was understandable that many, young, 'would be' pirates took advantage of this wonderful opportunity to climb aboard and imagine themselves sailing the high seas with a patch on one eye and a parrot perched on their shoulders.
The Notorious is:
A full size, sailing recreation of a 15th century vessel of exploration, the Spanish or Portuguese CARAVEL. Researched, designed and constructed by Graeme Wylie over an 11 year period. Constructed from Monterey Cypress saved from the bonfires on south west Victorian farms. Launched in 2011.
This ship is Australia's earliest ship reconstruction and is the only sailing caravel in the southern hemisphere.
She measures 17.5 m in length, her Beam is 5.5m, Draught - 2.1m Ballest - 12 tonnes bluestone, Displacement 58 tonnes.
The Lateen Rig borrowed from the Arab Dhow, improved windward sailing and was more easily handled by a small crew. Steered by an upright tiller extension called a Whipstaff as steering wheels had not been invented at that time.
These ships were used by European explorers to discover a route to plunder the riches of the east. Caravels were favoured by pirates for their speed, agility and large holds.
A variety of Notorious merchandise was available which included T/Shirts, Caps, Flags, Bandannas including a DVD of captioned photographs and video footage depicting the construction from log to completion, launch and sailing.
The owner (pictured below) and his wife live on this ship and travel around the coast of Australia and call in to ports and marinas to allow people to visit.
He told us that he feels safer sailing in this ship than in modern boats and the largest seas he has encountered was nine meters and lived to tell his story. What an exciting life!
THANK YOU FOR VIEWING. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
Thanks @pixresteemer
Nice! I bet that was a fun project.
There's a tallship festival in Duluth, MN every year and I've always wanted to show up, unannounced, with a pirate ship. You know, sail into the bay and fire off a few cannon rounds (blanks, of course).
It was @fotosdenada and I could tell by the look on those kids on board that they were in the element. I hope you get to experience your pirate fantasies one day my friend. 😄

What a fun attraction to take kinds to spend a day. It reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean, but they are far from Australia, lol. Stunning shoots Trudee 😊
Thank you Lena. The kids were really enjoying themselves. 😊
Howdy there Trudee! wow what an interesting way to live! hey was that mast supposed to be leaning like that??
Hi John....... Yes, there are a few people living in boats at the marina. It would be fun for a while but I think Id get a little claustrophobic after a while.
I'd really like to provide you with an intelligent answer to your question about the mast but I do not have one. 😊
howdy Trudee! were you off for a couple of days?
Well about living on a boat, I agree. It would have to be a pretty big one for me!
I take 2 or 3 days off every now and then and come back with more energy after doing so. It's also hard to get out and take photos and keep up to date with posting as well.😊
I agree Trudee, doing steemit daily is a big task and is a full-time, part-time job if not a full time one!
I think you do very well with everything you have going on though.
There are just not enough hours in the day......but I suppose that's a good problem to have. 😊
howdy again Trudee! yes that's a great way to look at it. If you didn't have anything to do and weren't struggling to get everything done then that would mean you had nothing going on and that would be depressing!
That's very kind of you John. I give things a go and don't like to leave a job unfinished.
me neither! I'm a typical male in that I can usually only do one thing at a time but that one job needs to be done right and then finished! lol. Most women are great multi-taskers.
You are very gracious in your assessment of multi-tasking women John.......but that may be because you are married to one and have first hand experience.😊
