What's Your English Vocabulary Size? Take A Test And Find Out!

I took a vocabulary size test at testyourvocab.com. That test is for passive vocabulary. It shows a list of words and you're supposed to check a box after each word if you know at least one of its meanings. Based on the first list, the algorithm narrows down your probable vocabulary size to a band and gives another list of words of appropriate frequency to give a more precise estimate.

My result was 25,500 words. Most adult native speakers who've taken the test are between 20,000 and 35,000 words. The test has a 40,000 word ceiling.

There is an interesting graph on the website showing the distribution of vocabulary sizes among those test takers who report being native speakers. My result is equivalent to the median of 26-year-old native speakers. I seem to be about 20 years behind people around my age who speak English as their first language.

Wow! ... I thought it could be between 5k or 10k ... but no ...

I have to admit that it was a very fun test, even though I forgot some words.

Thank you for sharing your results.

English classes in vzla are very poor. I think I can improve that number. Years ago I did a test where I calculate almost 5k but well...

This is a good tool to evaluate our word knowledge. I had like 6,500, that's within the range for non native speakers

Thanks for sharing your result. Your results will help me tailor the content of this series to your level.

Oh that's great, thanks for consider that.

Result 30,000

Where are you from?

What is your native tongue? What part of your education did you receive in English?

My native tongue is a mix dialect called Hindustani and all my education has been in English

Interesting. You could be called functionally bilingual then.

Actually I know Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic and a smattering of other languages like Punjabi, Pharsi..........
:-)

Although my Sanskrit is pretty rough .....

Hindi and Urdu are in my regular practice. I even get a pretty good workout of Arabic because of some of my Arab friends. I am a bit worried about my Sanskrit and Pharsi, but not enough to do much about it. I know I can pick it up when the need arises.

My regret in French. I stayed in France for a year and got a bit of it in my use and then poof! It literally evaporated from my mind. Same with Polish..............

How well do you speak those four? Do you have opportunities to practice them?

I only got to 21,500 :(

For as young an ESL speaker as yourself, 21,500 is an achievement. At your age, my English vocabulary was almost certainly smaller.

Ohh the test would be interesting.... You score is good though..

Outch, I'm well below average... That hurts O.o

This is very interesting and useful to learners of English!

I want to ask you something @@@markkujantunen if you don't mind, I admit that I use a lot of google translator to write some answers, but from the perspective of a serious English speaker, you see the grammatical errors that google can't solve, and I guess you ignore them on purpose to not be correcting all the time or you don't want to embarrassing us.

So, Do you know what can be interesting? of the answers that you have read made by me, maybe you can try to guess the result i got, and then I post it to see if the result is similar. :P (you can ignore all this game)

There would be no point in correcting others all the time.

I'm not sure what you mean. Can you clarify that, please? What answers do you mean?

My bad, I mean some of my comment, post, all of that.
