Bornholm - part II - Østerlars Kirke inside
Being a refuge against attackers, the walls are massive. The outside walls are 2 meter (6.6 feet) thick, but even the inside walls are easily 1m as you can see in the photo. They are made from rocks which are abundant in Bornholm.
There were two entrances: in medieval times it was custom for woman and children to enter the church through the North and men could choose (but almost invariably entered through the South entrance.) Don't ask me why. I cannot come up with any reason why having a penis or not would have anything to do with where you enter a building, but it was like that. What I tried to find out, but remains a mystery until this day is when this rule still applied when the church became a refuge: my twisted mind goes thinking about some priest saying with the building under heavy attack "you cannot enter through the South, take your seven children, go outside and re-enter through the North!" I am always a bit flabbergasted with rites and customs of religion...
Nowadays the North entrance have been permanently closed so anyone can enjoy equity (at least regarding entrance.)
