Happy Independence Day, NEW MALAYSIA!
Malaysia is celebrating its 61st Independence Day today - 31 August 2018. On this day, 61 years ago, the Federation of Malaya gained independence from the British Empire. Technically Malaysia was not formed on this day because the other two countries Sarawak and Sabah of Borneo, which later would be part of Malaysia in 1963, were not part of the federation yet. Malaysia was officially declared as a nation on 16 September 1963 (Malaysia Day) after the other two countries agreed to form a nation. However, 31 August 1957, was declared as the Malaysia's Independence Day and is celebrated as a national day every year since then.
I know it's confusing.
And I admit, as a Sarawak nationalist, I don't celebrate 31 August as my country (Sarawak) independence day because Sarawak was not a part of the federation back then. However, I celebrate 16 September (Malaysia Day) because that was when my country (Sarawak) became a part of Malaysia.
I know it's confusing because Malaysia was formed with 3 different countries (Federation of Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah) agreed to form a nation.
And why do I use the term the "NEW MALAYSIA"?
Well, the New Malaysia, is a label now popularly used to describe the new Pakatan Harapan Government after the May 9 general election. Malaysia was ruled by one party (Barisan National) for 6 decades until May 9, when the people decided they want CHANGE. We were tired of kleptocracy practiced by the previous government and corruptions were rampant. We want democracy. We want fairness and equality for all regardless of our race, religion, and creed. And when the new government was formed after May 9 general election, we knew it was made possible because of this one amazing man, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, our ex-premier who made a political comeback to lead the nation once again at the age of 93, making him the oldest political leader in the world.

There should be more communications between East and West Malaysians, and also bumiputras and non-bumis.
