How to recover old / dead /sulfated solar and car batteries: Off Grid Living Tips

in #ecotrain4 years ago (edited)

Are you living on solar power and constantly having batteries that wont hold charge, charge too quickly, or just don’t perform like they used to? Does your car battery run out of juice way to quickly and you don’t want to spend money on a new one? Or do you want to prolong the life of your battery by up-to 30%? I am reviewing a product that I have used recently with amazing results and one that I am highly recommending. Car and solar power batteries cost a lot of money, and very often batteries that seem dead can in fact be revived.. IF you have the right gadget!

I have recovered several batteries, one of which i was about to return to the shop for them to discard. That battery was just two years old, but had given up and would not hold charge.. but now after repair charging it is performing almost like new! The science of batteries can be a bit complicated, so let me explain the most common cause for premature battery failure, and how the gadget i am reviewing works!

SULFATION! A BATTERY KILLER

Batteries have thick metal plates that interact with the acids and current to charge them. If you let a battery voltage go even below just 12 Volts they start to build up sulfated deposits on the plates, and as a result they are not able to hold charge or perform properly. If you deeply discharge a battery regularly, to 10.5-12 Volts this sulfation happens much more quickly, and a battery can die within a year.. especially if its doesn’t get recharged quickly very soon afterwards. The bottom line is, don’t let you battery's get too low, and if you do because you have not got enough sun to charge them, then you may need to take some action to keep them happy!

Features
  • The Latest Intelligent CPU Control: Automatically adjusts the charge current and maintainability according to the temperature. Automatic detection of ambient temperature, so that winter can be full speed, summer is not overload.
  • Highly Compatible: Suitable for both 12V and 24V batteries, it works with SLA, WET, MF, FLOODED, GEL, VRLA, AGM, EFB batteries, meaning that it can be used for the batteries in cars, motorcycles, boats, mowers, and others. Can be selected a mode to charger car/truck batteries, motorcycle batteries or AGM batteries.
  • Intelligent Digital Display Intelligent Detection: The screen displays charging status and battery status, charge voltage, charge current, inside temperature, battery full, summer mode and winter mode, etc.
  • Pulse Repair Function: Our charger can helps to repair your loss battery or the battery with long idle time, and extend battery life. (Note: It can not activate a dead battery or repair a battery that is damaged seriously; it also can not repair a battery back to 100% new.)

NORMAL CHARGING VS REPAIR CHARGING

If you have a battery that is sulfated, then a normal charge is not going to remedy the problem. Some modern solar chargers do emit a small pulse current that does help to some extent to prevent sulfation happening in the first place, but it will not fix one! So after a lot of research on chargers, i discovered a very cheap device that is available online that can really help to recover your battery and give it a new lease of life.

The repair charger is one that takes around 18 hours to repair a battery using a very strong 10Amp pulse. It monitors the voltage and makes sure it does not go above 14.5 Volts during this process. This means that there is no chance of damaging it, which is what happens with normal manual chargers.. the last two I tried raised the voltage to over 15 Volts, which is a real no no for long charging durations. The magic is in the pulse, because it causes the sulphur to dislodge from the plates and dissolve into the acid solution.. thereby raising the acid power or gravity of the acid in the battery.

You can verify this using a battery meter. The one below is also available at very low cost online, and is one of the best model gravity meters i have seen. You can check the acid power using this meter before and after repair charging, and what you should see is the specific gravity rise back into the green. Once it has completed this process, which could be performed more than once for a very old battery, you can then use it again as normal.

Electrolytic Battery Hydrometer Dial Easy Read Battery

Price: $17.16

Here is a video i made to show you the the charger in action. Notice how the reading on the clamp meter is moving up and down every second, that's the pulse!

Damn - this is an IMPORTANT post!! I don't really understand how batteries work well enough, and also I have 'electrical glitches' that make them behave temperamentally for me. Any idea if a gadget like this would be good for the more electrically challenged of us? And how we might effectively use it? I am just about to throw out my new (6 weeks) old powerbank - phone shop fixed once already and said "battery shot". It's the same brand as Ploi's, and her last a good 18 months of daily use before the battery gives up its ghost. I have a shocking track record with them!

ooh well, this wont work with a powerbank.. sorry to say! its more for normal bigger batteries..

best advice is dont buy cheap ones,. and do get a good branded model in a proper shop.. THere are SO many copes, clones, fakes, and just shitty ones that dont have NEARLY the power they claim...

Have you used this? If so, what kind of results did you get?

yes, u can see it in action in the video.. briefly
it works! very happy with this little machine.. very cheap and can really make an improvement

Extending Application:

I wonder if any of this applies to laptop batteries and even smaller batteries like non-rechargeable AA batteries and others for example.

Chemistry & Electricity

What you're saying, Eco Alex, makes sense and reminds me of my high school science and chemistry classes which dealt with acid and sometimes electricity.

Microbiology

You talked about those two things and the interaction between the two. In microbiology, we can see relationships between electrons, electricity, etc, with cells and things like that. Your article reminded me of some of these things. So, I should try to research some of these more. I'm not currently living off the grid. I don't have solar power yet. Someday perhaps.
