Solar Eclipse 2017: Preparation Tips and More Details

Hi everyone,
Today we'll be viewing some tips for the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on August 21st, 2017.

Main Details

Where will totality occur? This eclipse is special because it's a total solar eclipse and will be sweeping the entire country. (The last eclipse to sweep the entire country like this happened in 1918, about a century ago!) However, to experience the approximately two to three minutes of totality, one needs to travel to the path of totality, depicted below.

Totality

When is it? The eclipse is on Monday, August 21st, 2017 and can be seen at least partially throughout the continental United States. The exact time it occurs in your region may be different from other areas, but it will first be seen off the coast of Oregon and will leave the US after passing through South Carolina.

How can I see it? You'll need eclipse glasses to watch the Eclipse. It's imperative that you get your hands on certified eclipse glasses with ISO certification before the eclipse. Up until the point of totality (when the sun is completely blocked out), you'll need to wear your eclipse glasses to avoid hurting your eyes. Only at the brief point of totality can you remove your glasses, though you'll have to put them back on when the sun starts getting uncovered.
remember your glasses!

Should I bring anything? Aside from what you normally would bring on such a trip, try to bring water, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the heat or long exposure to the sun. Remember to bring your Eclipse Glasses, as eclipses cannot be watched with any other kind of glasses (sunglasses/prescription glasses). Additionally, bring your phone (to stay connected), and perhaps extra batteries or chargers for any equipment you plan to bring.

How do I take photos of it? Here's a nice clip from The Verge detailing just how to do so. Remember that it's best to leave this to the professionals—normal point-at-shoot cameras can't produce great photos, and even DSLRs require precise photos and hours of computer editing to look as good as the professional ones. Instead, spend time during the eclipse snapping memories in your mind that will last a lifetime, and leave the photography to the pros.

Why is this so rare? See the video below on why total solar eclipses like this one are such a big deal:

Hopefully you have a great time watching the eclipse!

Nice! Hopefully you get clear weather so you can see the eclipse in its full beauty :)

2-3 days left! Make sure to secure your Eclipse glasses and get everything ready. Remember that without them, you can seriously hurt your eyes if you look at the Eclipse.

Tomorrow's the eclipse :)

Have fun watching tomorrow, whether you're in the totality path or if you're seeing the partial! Remember that if you try to see it without proper eclipse glasses, you'll literally burn your eyes.

Why?

Think about it like this: your retina (the outer part of your eye) is actually like a lens, in that it takes light in and concentrates it onto the back of your eye.

When you do this with super intense eclipse sunlight, the concentration will be so hot and bright it could literally burn a hole in the back of your eye.

So when the stakes are this high, it's crucial that you get proper eclipse glasses that are safe for solar viewing.
