There Are Too Many Old Farts On Here

in #dtube5 years ago

I wanted to make this a #ZNap but it exceeded 3 minutes. I got so carried away but everything was coming out of passion. I felt really excited to share this info that I lost track of time.

Old farts like you are not what makes social media take off. It is almost always young teenagers that are most interested in consuming content and caring about the personal lives of others + drama.

Thanks for reading & watching

While I agree, if you know this to be true, why not create content that attracts a younger audience?

The problem with DTube is that videos here do not last long enough to be found by young people and it's also difficult to directly upload content here from a console like PS4.

The only real alternative is livestreaming games to VIMM from a PC with a superfast internet connection.

This realization came to me only recently. However, I make content that I enjoy making. But to be honest, I don't think DTube is ready to attract the masses. We need a foundation. I am not so interested in producing the content that I used to make on here. I am also not interested in making Logan Paul type videos where I jump around like an idiot and act obnoxious to attract teenagers. These days, I want to build a stronger community, address and try to solve current issues with the platform. I think a lot of teenagers will find the whole password thing about Steem very off-putting. Having multiple passwords that you can't choose will probably deter many people from using the blockchain.

You're right, content isn't hosted here for a long time but onelovedtube now has their own IPFS node. I'm actually not that bothered right now with DTube not appealing to the masses. I think this is a sign that some things needs to be fixed around here.

You're not wrong.

Not just Old Farts but mainly Basement Dwelling Anonymous Sharts reside here.

I talked about this in a previous video I did about always worrying that it was mainly older people who were attracted to STEEM and particularly people in their 40s and 50s. Around the 5 minute mark was where I kind of talked about this.

The college aged people and younger kids have no interest in this place. One commenter said something that resonated a lot. He said that on YouTube you don't necessarily have to buy your influence but on STEEM you have to buy your way into having influence and younger people don't have any money. So we don't get the younger generation wanting to pull any type of following here.

Yes, it's concerning that a bunch of 35-50 years that don't even know what's in style anymore are talking about how amazing this social media platform is. I see that as odd.

If I am talking about DTube, I think it looks very outdated and plain. The interface is too basic. The password situation on Steem is also off-putting to a lot of people. I think this place also comes off as "too serious" for a lot of people. It isn't a place where you can just fuck around and have fun. If the whole influence thing you mentioned is what is discouraging teenagers here, then maybe blogging isn't what will make this place successful.

These problems definitely exist, but I hope to do my part to rectify them.

Even back in 2016 I was concerned with some of these issues and there was a period of time in mid 2017 that it seem like things might be turning around and we were getting more diversity and a little better age range on the lower end but it quickly faded. More issues stacked up and it really breaks people's back when they feel they are starting to get somewhere but then the value collapses and their time has effectively eroded away.

That was one of the reasons why I created the @pranks account and was working on getting pranksters to form a community here but even my friend @gilstraptv wouldn't post here even with all the issues of getting demonetized on YouTube

Good luck with everything. I have given up on trying to change things here.

I agree we need the youth to come here. Not sure about "old farts" hahaha ;) but I get you.

Big constraints are:

  1. signing up... usually takes forever and most are impatient.

  2. Four private keys that at first are so confusing. Most have a max of 2 keys to get into their actual home. Online is generally one key (unless two-way authentication is used).

  3. When and if you get an account. You have to contend with ultra limited resource credits. Tell a teen then can only post a couple times a week..."see ya later!"

  4. Say they do want to get more RCs by purchasing Steem (teens have money?*sarc) they have to set themselves on an exchange and trade. Good luck.

Now you have pretty much lost the attention of most normal human beings. You start posting for the first time and you expect to 'earn' hahaha.

Basically way too many hurdles and expectations need to be reoriented.

Figure a way to break these hurdles down, which I do have some ideas about, then the flood gates open with good marketing.

  1. True but it is changing because of RCs
  2. Yes, I can see this annoying and confusing a lot of youngsters. They wanna log on from mobile devices and this is way to troublesome. You can't even customize your own password.
  3. True.
  4. They don't necessarily need more RCs through purchasing, but yeah. Teens don't want to be mindful of RCs and shit.

This is a long term project. Everyone can focus on their area of expertise and solve the aforementioned problems.

lol i am 24 and i feel old. well i think this is the basic problem of steem, it’s too serious for the younger audience. i think if we can lower the barrier of entry, and have some very popular personalities to join the platform that might just do the trick. we haven’t looked at ’fun’ as a marketable service to drive traffic here.

Bro, give it a few years and you'll become prehistoric by social media standards lol. In life, you are very young, but in terms of social media, the peak is around 13-15 years old. I agree, things can be too serious here at times. A social media platform that isn't "fun" will probably become more of a networking platform. Teens are the ones most looking for fun while older people are trying to earn money and things like that.

Holy truth is right. Truth is the most holy thing.

You are right, we need those young people, that's why I always support them, just like I'm supporting @geekoverdose a 14 years old guy and @steemersayu907 15 years old. We need to think younger, much younder and let the next generation enjoy @dtube and make more fun things that they like. So much vlogging, while we really can be more creative and entertainy.

Thanks a lot Clix for the mention !

I hope the young people take up DTube and start vloggin on it but for that we must make it presentable to them in a way they like it.

But But But... What can be the WAY ???

IMO, everyone needs to find what they are good at and find out how they can contribute. Not everyone needs to produce content. Some can focus on the community while others can focus on making the DTube interface look more interesting. It looks outdated and stale! If you are younger, you can focus on having fun in your videos and producing content you find interesting. Some others might work on marketing and networking. Some time down the line, we may need effective marketing to teenagers to convince them that this place is where all the "cool" people go. I doubt a 53 year old man could do something like that to convince teens. It would have to be younger people creating the example.

Yup, you're right coz the different age groups know their counterparts better and understand them better comparatively of the other age groups. We must work upon spraying the room fresheners to make DTube fresh and attractive people upon here. We must think that what "WE" can provide what "WE" are good at, only then we would be able to put our heart on the screens and that may be the thing which can be a magnet.

Thanks A Lot for your words :)
I'll do keep em' in my mind ..

Cheers!

Yes we can do that. We can be building a proper foundation for the younger people to thrive and see this place as cool. The DTube interface looks boring and outdated. It is the complete opposite of stimulating. We've got work to do and a daily vlog will probably not fix anything here.

Woah ! That was really interesting to hear.. Each day I go through all this but wasn't able point it out. Well your words makes sense , anything that has become famous or popular it was beacause of the teens or a lot of money was invested or it became a trend.

I agree that at the moment on DTube the no. of kids is not much n maybe if that's all set then the blockchain might get a big boost !

I try to recruit some of my friends here but the main point is they don't find STEEM interesting and I believe the reason is that you said ...

We must take a step for it and in such a way that can be well to go with the kids.

But Now comes the question.... What should be the STEP ??

BTW Thanks for pointing out at this pretty untouched but important aspect!

#ZAP+

What kind of content do your friends gravitate towards? Are a lot of them on Twitch and the like? How could it be made more interesting you think?

For the average person who knows nothing about cryptocurrency, Steem probably isn't all that interesting.

Well I can point out some things that we guys like and they are not present upon DTube presently.

  • VINES
  • PRANKS
  • FUNNY STUFF
  • COOL GAMEPLAYS

I think these stuff can attract em' as well as many teens too !

Yup, for a person for whom crypto is all Greek n Latin, he would surely don't give a damn to STEEM at the current condition.

Steem Tide Pod Challenge????

Glad to have you here man. You are an important part of this platform. Read my other comment I wrote to you in this post under @clixmoney's comment.

Thanks buddy, I do feel pretty honored to be a part of this Blockchain :)
Yeah I will check that comment too for sure ;)

Cheers!

I'm a middle aged man, I guess that makes me an old fart, then again, I'm not a fan of any other social media site other than steemit.

Young people tend to be dreamers, not always focused on reality, or care to be.

Reality is all too mundane and boring for many people (including some "old farts") they want drama, the faker the better, and in some ways I don't blame them, it can be real hell transitioning to adulthood.

Pretty much anyone over 25 (including me) is an old fart by social media standards. The 13 to 15 year old demographic determines what apps and platforms are cool and trendy. Thats why the majority of popular youtubers' fanbase is that demographic. They are the ones that invest the most time into consuming content.

Yeah, they dream because life is mundane for them. They have to go to school and study for the majority of their lives.

I escaped the boring school routine when I was in my teens, no regrets.

No internet back then, movies and music were my whole life.

Nostalgia, is my drug of choice now, mid-life crisis, here I come!

How did you escape the boring school routine? You just dropped out and started working?

I think socialization is what keeps people attached to our past and the good old days. We eventually reach a point in our life where we have to function in a methodical way and that kind of makes new things seem strange. Perhaps it is our lack of emotional connection with life as we get older that makes it seem like things in the past were always better than they are now.

I missed this reply, sorry for the delay.

Yes, I started working at the age of 14, and continued to study for necessary qualifications part time.

We had/have? a great flexible education system in Minnesota. (community colleges, many trade schools etc.)

You could choose your own hours and courses, it wasn't prestigious, it was unusually practical.

I could schedule my life in a matter that was the most effective, starting at the age of 14, a lifestyle choice that I still utilize today.

Its your mind, many people are stuck with limited, or no choices on how to educate their minds, especially in China.

Looking back, all of the best education I have had has been hands on, real world experience.

Almost nobody is allowed to think outside of the box anymore, much to the detriment of society.

Its true, most knowledge that is impactful comes from real hands on experience. Book knowledge is easily forgotten and/or diluted.

Good for you. It seems like youre doing.l quite well for yourself in China.

Hahaah yes so true!!! All the hip young kids are social media everything, but they also don’t care about privacy and might regret the things they post later in life.. like me hahahaha

On the plus side, if you ever want to work for Facebook or Google, you wont even need to submit a resume because they already have all your information!

Yes i know many young teens who're really talented and skilled and have nothing to hold them back they are free and very creative!

I'm trying to bring some of them to here they can bring a value!

Awesome. Good luck with that.

You're 100% on the money here dude. If you truly want to blow up on YouTube, Instagram, e.t.c, it's all about that 13-15 year old demographic. I attended some YouTube conferences in London and 90% of the attendees were screaming 13 year old fans. They don't only scream and fanatically watch content, they buy merch as well (with their little pocket money and parents' credit cards). This is how Logan Paul apparently moves millions of dollars a year in merch, selling shirts and caps to 13 year olds.

Ding ding ding!
