This is not a very common publication, among which I have been publishing for the hashtag #danceweekend, because generally there I review songs, groups or musical genres of great impact, either in a country or at a historical moment. But today's case is very different, because it is an artist who had just one great success, specifically in my country. But during the time that was in the first places of the radio in Venezuela, it became a fever, it was danced in all the discotheques, in all the celebrations, in all the houses.

Despite the fact that my family and I lived in Europe at that time, success was such in our country, that we got their song first on cassettes and then the whole album (of course, an LP). The artist: Exuma, the song: Do Wah Nanny.

But we must clarify that it is not an unknown artist. No, in fact he was considered one of the greatest artists of the Bahamas. In 1978 he was decorated by Queen Elizabeth II of England for his contribution to the culture of the Bahamas.

He highlighted with a very original style that combined rhythms such as Carnival, Junkanoo and Calypso with the ballad. From his music it was said that it was impossible to classify it. He created rhythmic and harmonic atmospheres that were somewhat magical and hypnotic. His music, which reflected the African, Amerindian and European cultural heritage of the island, was admired by artists of the stature of Bob Dylan.

In his career, which had a very favorable beginnings, he alternated with people like Dylan himself, Jimi Hendrix and Barbra Streisand.

His discography is composed of 10 studio albums.

With a promising career, Exuma, whose real name was Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey, had the luxury of breaking his contract with the record companies when something did not like him, which in the end let him with no contract and without recording anymore.

His third album, the first he made with the label Kama Sutra Records, from the United States, was titled, the same name as the first song: Do Wah Nanny. This album, for some reason, had an unprecedented success in some very specific places, as is the case of Caracas, in Venezuela. In this city it found an echo in the hippie movement that was responsible for broadcasting it on the radio, until it became an absolute success.

The song was included in the Album three times, since it included a second part and a live version. During 1971 and 1972 this song was danced in all imaginable events in Venezuela, and so it jumped the ocean to get to our house in Berlin, where we also made it part of all our parties and dances.
