The name of Buena Vista Social Club has been around the world, thanks to the music they play. Because of the sound characteristics of the group and the age of some of its members, many people think that it is an old and legendary Cuban group, but the reality is different. This group was born as a product of a musical project developed by the American guitarist and producer Ry Cooder and the Cuban musician and producer Juan de Marcos González.

The name
There was in Marianao, a sector of Havana, Cuba, a very popular nightclub where bands used to perform and the specialty of the place was to go dancing there. These sites were species of brotherhoods and were clubs separated by ethnic characteristics in most cases, since that correspond to a time when racial discrimination predominated throughout the country. But the prestige of this place was settled with the performances made in their spaces by artists such as "Cachao" López, Arsenio Rodríguez, Compay Segundo and Ibrahím Ferrer, among others.
A musical project
In 1996 travels to the island of Cuba Ry Cooder, with the idea of starting to make contacts with a view to making an album of traditional music that had direct roots in Africa. Although he did not get what he was looking for, he had the opportunity to meet several legendary musicians and singers, many of them practically removed from the musical activity.
It is there where between the two producers they begin to develop a new proposal, which was to resume a traditional Cuban sound that had remained in the past, the reference they used was precisely the music that used to be performed at the Buena Vista Social Club.
So they decided to combine some traditional elements with some newer resources, but looking to be as close as possible to the initial concept. Within that search they decided to use, instead of the Cuban tres, an instrument that is part of the most traditional musical forms of the island, the instrument that gave rise to the one used in Cuba: the lute, which was still used in some peasant sectors and for this they integrated a virtuoso of that instrument, as is Barbarito Torres.
The names of the singers, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliades Ochoa and Omara Portuondo, are accompanied for that record production, of some younger people sought especially to achieve the sound they had raised. Some studio musicians completed the list of participants on the album.
So it is clear that it was not a group, but a foreign musical project.
The movie
In 1998, the German scriptwriter, film producer, actor and director, Wim Wenders, travels to Havana, presence and records the return of Ry Cooders to the Cuban capital, for the recording of the project they had been preparing for two years. Wenders captures the studio recordings, accompanies the musicians to their homes, to their daily activities and after the recording of the album follows them to their first international presentation, in Amsterdam, and ending in a concert at the famous Carnegie Hall in the city from New York.

Existía en Marianao, un sector de La Habana, Cuba, un local nocturno muy popular donde solían presentarse grupos musicales y la especialidad del sitio era ir a bailar allí. Esos sitios eran especies de cofradías y eran clubes separados por características étnicas en la mayoría de los casos, pues corresponden a una época en que la discriminación racial predominaba en todo el país. Un proyecto musical
En 1996 viaja a la isla de Cuba Ry Cooder, con la idea de empezar a hacer contactos con miras a hacer un disco de música tradicional que tuviera raíces directas en África. Aunque no conseguía lo que andaba buscando, tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a varios músicos y cantantes legendarios, muchos de ellos prácticamente retirados de la actividad musical.
Es allí donde entre los dos productores empiezan a desarrollar una nueva propuesta, la cual se planteaba retomar un sonido tradicional cubano que se había quedado en el pasado, la referencia que utilizaron fue, precisamente la música que solía interpretarse en el Buena Vista Social Club.
Así decidieron combinar algunos elementos tradicionales con algunos recursos más novedosos, pero buscando estar lo más cerca posible del concepto inicial. Dentro de esa búsqueda deciden utilizar, en lugar del tres cubano, instrumento que forma parte de las formas musicales más tradicionales de la isla, el instrumento que dio origen al usado en Cuba: el laúd, el cual se seguía usando en algunos sectores campesinos y para ello integraron a un virtuoso de ese instrumento, como lo es Barbarito Torres.
Los nombres de los cantantes, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliades Ochoa y el de Omara Portuondo, aparecen acompañados para esa producción discográfica, de alguna gente más joven buscada especialmente para lograr el sonido que se habían planteado. Algunos músicos de estudio completaron la plantilla de participantes en el disco.
Acá queda claro que no se trataba de un grupo, sino de un proyecto musical foráneo.
La película
En 1998, el guionista, productor, actor y director de cine alemán, Wim Wenders, viaja a La Habana, presencia y graba el regreso de Ry Cooders a la capital cubana, para la grabación del proyecto que venían preparando desde hace dos años. Wenders registra las grabaciones en estudio, acompaña a los músicos a sus casas, a sus actividades diarias y luego de la grabación del disco los sigue a su primera presentación internacional, en Amsterdam y que finaliza en un concierto en el famoso Carnegie Hall de la ciudad de Nueva York.
El balance
Para hacer corto el resumen, puedo decir que el disco obtuvo el Grammy, la película fue nominada al Premio Oscar de la Academia y la música tradicional cubana empezó a ocupar un sitial de honor en todo el mundo.
