I am an inveterate cinema lover and one of the things I like to do most is watch a good movie. In the 80s (I was about 20 years old) was when I took the most to go to the movies and I could enjoy great releases and movies, some more known than others, but especially the great successes of that era.

I can also say that I can watch the same movie several times (if I liked it, of course). On one occasion I went to the cinema 13 times to see the same movie. That was years before, but I achieved that record. However, in the 80s I saw one, that despite having caused me a profound impact and having left a deep impression, I did not see it again (and I still do not have a second appreciation). The plot was surprising and I take advantage of and I quote the Wikipedia in Spanish, which says the following:

A group of scientists led by Dr. Michael Anthony Brace and Dr. Lilian Reynolds invents a helmet that can detect all the thoughts, feelings and sensations of the user, as well as record them and have them received by another person. This film, as well as having an interesting subject for me, featured a performance that left me surprised, because it was an actor that until then I did not know: Christopher Walken, a man capable of showing the most empty look that one can imagine, almost like looking inside the soul of a dead person. By the way, that was the last movie that Natalie Wood did, because she died during the filming.

That fact ended there and although I could see Walken in other movies, I had the memory and the image of him in the science fiction film that I mentioned.

Part 2

Around 1985, my music teacher, Gerry Weil, a Venezuelan of Austrian origin, a forerunner of jazz and electronic music in Venezuela, began insisting that I become a keyboard player and start making electronic music. He was the one who gave me my first copy of the Digital Performer program and who started talking to me about the MIDI format and all the basic concepts of music programming.

Although I did not dedicate attention to that aspect of the music at that moment, it did not take long until another musician, the extraordinary Mexican friend and producer Luis Oliver, insisted on the subject again, but here it was already a formal proposal to give me some of the jobs he could not do. That's how it went. And to start catching up I started buying all the editions of the Spanish magazines Computer Music and Future Music.

There I started to meet Djs and producers of a music that was new to me, among those names were some predecessors like the Finnish Jori Hulkkonen or the British Fatboy Slim. Of the latter I was deeply touched by one of his songs, because I discovered that he was a true artist. That song was with the voice of Jim Morrison, the singer of The Doors and its title "Bird of Prey" (I'm going to leave it as a bonus track at the end of this post.

Part 3

The rest was like a mix that played life. I suppose that Norman Quentin Cook (the real name of Fatboy Slim) had the same perception as me (and probably many more people) and thought it would be interesting to make a danceable tune with a protagonist that would be as opposite as possible to the dance. And here was where, in the year 2000, Fatboy Slim and Christopher Walken came together to bring us an exceptional piece that serves today to brighten up this #danceweekend.

Soy un amante empedernido del cine y una de las cosas que más me gusta hacer es ver una buena película. En los años 80 (a mis 20 años) fue cuando más aproveché para ir al cine y pude disfrutar de grandes estrenos y de películas, algunas más conocidas que otras, pero sobre todo los grandes éxitos de esa época.

También puedo afirmar que puedo ver varias veces la misma película (si me ha gustado, claro). En una ocasión llegué a ir 13 veces al cine a ver la misma película. Eso fue años antes, pero logre ese récord. Sin embargo, en los 80 vi una, que a pesar de haberme causado un impacto profundo y de haberme dejado una honda huella, no la volví a ver (y sigo sin una segunda apreciación). La trama era sorprendente y aprovecho y cito la Wikipedia en español, que dice lo siguiente:

Un grupo de científicos dirigidos por Dr. Michael Anthony Brace y Dr. Lilian Reynolds inventa un casco que puede detectar todos los pensamientos, sentimientos y sensaciones del que lo usa, así como grabarlos y que otra persona los reciba. Las cosas se complican cuando tienen que enfrentarse a las implicaciones éticas del mismo y empeoran aún mas, cuando descubren, que el gobierno y el ejército tratan de apoderarse del invento para aplicaciones bélicas como el lavado de cerebro.

Esa película, además de ser un tema ineresante para mí, contó con una actuación que me dejó sorprendido, pues se trataba de un actor que hasta ese momento yo no conocía: Christopher Walken, un hombre capaz de mostrar la mirada más vacía que uno pueda imaginar, casi como mirar dentro del alma de un muerto. Por cierto, fue esa la última película que hizo Natalie Wood, pues ella murió durante el rodaje.

Ese hecho terminó allí y aunque pude ver a Walken en otras películas, me quedó el recuerdo y la imagen de él en la cinta de ciencia ficción que comenté.

Aproximadamente en 1985, mi profesor de música, Gerry Weil, un venezolano de origen austríaco, precursor del jazz y la música electrónica en Venezuela, empezó a insistirme en que me convirtiera en tecladista y que empezara a hacer música electrónica. Fue el quien me facilitó mi primera copia del programa Digital Performer y quien empezó a hablarme del formato MIDI y todos los conceptos básicos de la programación de música.

Aunque yo no le dediqué en ese momento la atención a esa faceta de la música, no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que otro músico, el extraordinario amigo y productor mexicano Luis Oliver, me volvió a insistir en el tema, pero aquí ya era una propuesta formal para darme a mí algunos de los trabajos que él no podía hacer. Así fue. Y para empezar a ponerme al día empecé a comprar todas las ediciones de las revistas españolas Computer Music y Future Music.

Allí empecé a conocer a Djs y productores de una música que era nueva para mí, entre esos nombres había algunos precursores como el finlandés Jori Hulkkonen o el británico Fatboy Slim. De éste último me impactó profundamente una de sus canciones, pues descubrí que se trataba de un verdadero artista. Aquella canción era con la voz de Jim Morrison, el cantante de The Doors y su título “Bird of Prey” (lo voy a dejar de bonus track al final de este post.

Lo demás fue como una mezcla que jugó la vida. Yo supongo que Norman Quentin Cook (el nombre real de Fatboy Slim) tuvo la misma percepción que yo (y seguramente muchas personas más) y pensó que sería interesante hacer un tema bailable con un protagonista que resultara lo más opuesto posible al baile. Y aquí fue donde, en el año 2000, se juntaron Fatboy Slim y Christopher Walken para traernos una pieza excepcional que sirve hoy para alegrarnos este #danceweekend.

Ich bin ein begeisterter Kinoliebhaber und eines der Dinge, die ich am liebsten mache, ist einen guten Film anzusehen. In den 80er Jahren (ich war ungefähr 20 Jahre alt) nahm ich die meiste Zeit mit, um ins Kino zu gehen, und ich konnte großartige Veröffentlichungen und Filme genießen, von denen einige bekannter als andere waren, vor allem aber die großen Erfolge dieser Epoche.

Ich kann auch sagen, dass ich denselben Film mehrmals sehen kann (wenn es mir gefallen hat). Einmal ging ich 13 Mal ins Kino, um denselben Film zu sehen. Das war Jahre zuvor, aber ich habe diesen Rekord erreicht. In den 80er Jahren sah ich jedoch einen, der mich zwar tief beeindruckte und eine grosse Spur in mir hinterlies, aber dass ich es nicht wieder sah (und sogar heute habe ich immer noch keine zweite Wertschätzung). Die Handlung war überraschend und ich werde die Wikipedia auf Spanisch zitieren.

Eine Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern unter der Leitung von Dr. Michael Anthony Brace und Dr. Lilian Reynolds erfindet einen Helm, der alle Gedanken, Gefühle und Empfindungen des Benutzers erkennt, aufzeichnet und von einer anderen Person empfangen lässt. Die Dinge werden kompliziert, wenn sie sich den ethischen Konsequenzen stellen müssen und noch schlimmer, wenn sie feststellen, dass Regierung und Armee versuchen, die Erfindung für kriegsähnliche Anwendungen wie die Gehirnwäsche zu ergreifen.

Dieser Film hatte nicht nur ein interessantes Thema für mich, sondern auch eine Performance, die mich überraschte, denn ich kannte bis dahin nicht, diesen Schauspieler nichtt: Christopher Walken, ein Mann, der den leersten Blick dass man sich vorstellenen kann zeigen, fast wie in die Seele eines toten Menschen zu schauen. Das war übrigens der letzte Film, den Natalie Wood gemacht hat, weil sie während der Dreharbeiten starb.

Die ganze Sache endete dort und obwohl ich Walken in anderen Filmen sehen konnte, hatte ich die Erinnerung und das Bild von ihm in dem Science-Fiction-Film, den ich erwähnte.

Der Rest war wie eine Mischung, die das Leben spielte. Ich nehme an, dass Norman Quentin Cook (der wahre Name von Fatboy Slim) die gleiche Wahrnehmung wie ich (und wahrscheinlich viele andere) hatte und dachte, es wäre interessant, eine tanzbare Melodie mit einem Protagonisten zu machen, der das totalle Gegenteil zum tanzen wäre. Und hier kamen im Jahr 2000 Fatboy Slim und Christopher Walken zusammen, um uns eine außergewöhnliche Produktion zu bringen, das heute dazu dient, dieses #danceweekend aufzuhellen.
