Daily Dose of Sultnpapper Special Edition: Why is now the best time to join steemit? I see a couple reasons…

in #dailydose6 years ago (edited)

The time we are in...

This time we are in right now here on steemit is very trying for those of that have been for a while. We had the pleasure to see the run upward on the value of steem to the $4.00 mark, those were good times indeed. While I didn’t have a lot of steem (still don’t) I was able to see the good things it was doing for people in less fortunate places around the world that were depending on steem for their livelihoods.

The fall that endured...

The fall that endured all through 2018 was a sad thing to watch for a couple reasons. Number one was that those people who were depending on it were losing their means to actually survive. Those are the real losers in this decline of steem for two reasons. The money they had that was used to keep them connected to the internet and steemit had to be used for feeding themselves and their families. Reason number two was losing a bunch of people who had voting power that is no longer being used makes it harder to earn for those that could stay connected and on here to earn.

But with that...

But with that decline and all the misery it brought for some folks it has created a new opportunity as well. That opportunity is for those people who haven’t made it here yet. The reason I bring this up is because we who are here know the problem with the retention rates of people who join and several groups are working with folks as soon as they hit the platform to make them aware of what it takes to survive and make it here on steemit.

Those groups didn’t exist in September of 2017 when I came here and if I weren’t such a stubborn old man I would have probably left long ago but I had my reasons to stay.

One reason...

One reason to join now is it a lot easier to get noticed and with all the groups in place to help with newcomers it makes this an excellent time to join.

The other reason...

The other reason I say this is the best time is because people can cut a lot of time off of earning a respectable REP number. I just looked at the #introduceyourself tag under ‘new’ and went through there looking at REP’s. The REP numbers are quite impressive, in fact it almost angers me that I had to work seven months on here to earn a REP score that is about the average of what newcomers are earning here in a week with just their introduction post.

It is real common to find new folks with REP’s in the high 30’s and low 40’s. Some people have cracked into the 50’s and I also saw one at 63; hell I haven’t even made it to 63 yet and I have been on here damn near everyday for 15 months hopefully adding some value to this place.

Another thing I...

Another thing I noticed, because I actually spent a good amount of time looking there, has me just a bit curious on what is going on. When looking at the “new” posts I went down the list quite a ways and at the 7 day old mark the was a big gap in the age of the posts and it picked up at 24 days and then the next one said last month. I just can’t imagine that not one person made an introduction post in more than two weeks but I guess that was the case since stuff supposedly can’t be deleted from the blockchain.

If that is the case...

If that is the case this place is really in bigger trouble than I thought. I haven’t paid attention to the Steem Stat reports for quite some time but the lack of new intro posts is a testament to just how bad things are. Before the problem was always retention of newcomers; now it appears that getting people here is the most important issue. You can’t retain something you don’t have. That retention problem will go away if there is nobody joining so that will fix that problem; it will also more than likely be the nail in the coffin for steemit.

I just recently...

I just recently was invited to join a discord group called State of Steem and there are some heavy hitters in there when it comes to steemit and steem and I can’t wait to see just what the talk is in that channel about to overcome this situation we find ourselves in.

Normally I don't...

Normally I don’t do more than one post a day but I really felt the need to share this as we close out 2018 today. We all need to be talking this place up among our friends and family that aren’t on here and encourage them to join.

Like I said, there isn’t a better time than now.

Until next time,
@sultnpapper

Hi and welcome here! When I started on steemit, my biggest problem was to find interesting people to interact with. So, to help newcomers getting started I created a directory with other interesting and or talented steemians to follow or interact with. Feel free to check it out at https://www.steemiandir.com I am sure it will help you find like-minded people. Enjoy your stay here and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

@sultnpapper61 thanks a lot for sharing such a beautiful insight!

Reading your write-up has encouraged, inspired and motivated me to stay on this platform. You have given more reasons to stay and not quit.

Once again thank you!
Happy New Year!
Warm regards!

Interesting insight.
I am also sticking around. Steemit has changed a lot over the past year, and I am really hoping that it takes an upswing soon. I enjoy the platform and for sure I enjoy the people I have 'met' on here, but I have to admit, I was hoping at some point this could become a source of supplemental income for me. You know, it'd be nice for some $$ to build more goatie pens and whatnot. Although, with my almost free pallet-pens, it's not a necessity. ;)
Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes, the people here are what makes the place. If steem does take back up that would be great too. This isn't like any other social media in my opinion but my knowledge of social media is about as much as my knowledge of how to preform open heart surgery.
I don't know exactly how I provided any "inspiration", but if you say so I will gladly accept the credit. :) Thanks.

Im not very 'social media' literate either. I do have a facebook account, but Im not interested in twitter, instagram, and whatever other nonsense is out there. I dont see the point of getting on multiple sites. I have facebook to keep in contact with family members, and to advertise my baby goats locally, and Steemit for the awesome people here, information, and maybe someday, a little income. ;)

Haha, well, the inspiration given unintentionally is usually the most valuable kind. :)

Steemit, Inc.'s onboarding had come to a halt a little after Ned's layoff announcement by my understanding. It is probably operating at a slower pace presently.

Such onboarding ports as steeminvite.com have really picked up the ball. You can now either claim an account token using RCs or buy an account token for 3 steem. You can then have an email invite link sent to any email address. If the invite is declined or not excepted in the time length given then the token and any SP delegation offered will be released for reuse.

Thanks for the information, it would make sense that with 70% layoffs that there would be or could be a hold up on new accounts, but I don't believe there is much demand there to begin with right now. I hope I am wrong though.

Since HF20 there is not only the needed SP delgation requirement but also.a RC cost. It takes me 4 days to recover from an account token claim. There is little sense in giving someone an account with no SPs since HF20.

Howdy sir sultnpapper! I agree about the getting new members problem and the retention problem is huge because of the rc system which has severely hurt retention.

Retention has always been a big problem here, long before the RC system that went into effect back at HF20. HF20 may have made it worse I'm not sure , but the problem existed well in advance of it.
There are over a million accounts on here and my guess is that less than 20,000 are actually doing something, even though the Steem Stat reports put the number at 40 or 50K's.

yes sir I agree. The latest numbers I heard were ten to twelve thousand active members.

A real shame it is when you think about it, this place really has great people here for the most part.

yes sir I'm constantly impressed by the creative, innovative and brilliant people we have here! It's stunning and makes me feel like a real dummy everyday! lol.

Hey, are you not putting your stories in steemitbloggers any more? I keep looking in history and never see them?

howdy sir sultnpapper! no sir I've never gotten on their discord channel for putting posts on there, in fact I didn't even know that was there! lol.

For some reason I thought you were part of that group, I guess I was mistaken?

You have certainly added value to my steemit journey.
Though I’ve been in a bit of Hibernation mode with steemit.
