Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 11/21/18> Looks like my Black Friday has to change...

in #dailydose5 years ago

This Black Friday...

It just occurred to me that I won’t be winning any prizes this Black Friday at one of my favorite shopping places for Black Friday shopping.

The one store that I have made it too on Black Friday morning for the last few years has been my “lucky spot” and last year, while I didn’t win anything, the Papper clan did quite well there as the Mrs. won the giant FAO Swarz teddy bear and the oldest boy won one of the two $500 store gift cards.

The year before...

The year before on Black Friday I won the main prize that day as I won an employee discount card for a year and that card got me an additional 20% off on all purchases for the entire year. I don’t know how much in savings that totaled up too but I know it had to be a bunch. The Mrs. and the kids wore me out with picking up clothes that they had put in the “hold for pickup” location at the customer service booth all year long.

The Palais Royal store...

That store was the Palais Royal store in Spring, TX and I got to know the ladies who worked the customer service booth pretty well in that year. About three months ago that store closed up though and so there will be no Black Friday contest to win there.
The store was mainly a clothing store, but when you have four kids to keep in threads the expenses can rack up pretty quickly.

I think I told...

I think I told the story once on here how I won that prize but since I don’t have anything really pressing that needs to be addressed I think I will just go ahead and tell it again. It really is a good story and I like telling it, since I did win.

It was Black Friday in 2016...

It was Black Friday in 2016 and the store opened at 6:00 AM. The store is mainly, or was mainly, a clothing store but they had other departments as well including electronics and home furnishing so they had a couple really smoking hot “door buster” specials on a big screen TV and one of those knock off tablets that is similar to an I Pad. Of course, it was very limited supply of those, and people lined up pretty early in order to be able to get those items.

The first 100 people...

The other thing they had going on was that the first 100 people in line got a ticket to fill out for the grand prize drawing which was the employee discount for the year. We got there to the store right at about 5:15 AM and got our spots in line. Since it was only the adults who got tickets for the drawing only me, Mrs P, and our oldest boy went to this store and stood in line. We were somewhere in the middle of the first one hundred, I would say not any further back then number 60 or so.

They also handed...

They also handed out tickets to people who were wanting to purchase those limited quantity items, so if you got a ticket while you waited for the doors to open you were guaranteed that you would be able to purchase one of those items.
We weren’t far enough towards the front of the line to get ticket for the TV but I did get a ticket for the tablet, we weren’t in the market for a TV so that didn’t bother us and we actually weren’t in the market for the tablet either but at $49 it sounded like a pretty good deal.

So the store opened...

So the store opened and people flocked to those displays to exchange their tickets and get their items. The only check outs they had open that morning was at the front of the store so after I got my tablet I went to the front to pay and it just so happened that the lady in front of me had gotten a TV and she paid with a credit card.

So when the cashier handed her back her credit card the cashier said, “thank you Mrs. XXXX “ I can’t remember the lady’s name right now but I did that morning because it wasn’t a common name like Smith or Jones. This lady took her receipt and her TV and headed out the door.

So at seven AM...

So at seven AM they had the drawing for the grand prize and they announced the winner over the loud speaker. It wasn’t any of the Papper clan that had their name announced so the Mrs. and the boy were ready to go.

I told them to just hang on a little bit, no need to be in such a hurry. The store manager had given the person five minutes to ge to the front of the store and claim the prize. The wife said, “What are we waiting around for?” I told her that I am going to win that employee discount. She promptly informed me that they already called the winner’s name and it wasn’t me.

Well the wife was...

Well the wife was correct, that name they called wasn’t mine but I knew who’s name it was and I watched her walk out with her TV, she was the lady in front of me at the checkout line when I was paying for the tablet.

By then there was...

By then there was only a couple minutes left for the lady to claim the prize and I knew she hadn’t come back in the store, she was tickled to get the TV and she was already on the road home to show her family just how well she had done was my guess.

So another couple minutes...

So another couple minutes go by and now the wife and boy are ready to go, I said, “Just hold your horses, they are fixin' to call my name as the winner of the grand prize and no sooner than I had gotten those words out the manager’s voice came across the load speaker saying that they were going to draw another name since the first person hadn’t claimed the prize.

Ten seconds later...

Ten seconds later she read my name over the loud speaker to which I replied, “right here” as I gave a little wave of the hand in her direction.

I also started walking towards the counter, but I stopped and turned to the wife and boy and said, “I told you so.” Then I proceeded up to collect my prize.

The store even...

The store even let me return the tablet I just purchased and then repurchased it using my new discount card. In fact, the wife and boy had purchased some clothes and I also returned all of those and repurchased those as well using the discount so they were very happy that I didn’t let us leave.

Had that lady not paid with a credit card and I had not heard her name I would most likely had left when they didn’t call my name the first time. That also proved to be a big lesson learned for the Mrs. and she would have a similar thing happen last year in winning the teddy bear.

The store manager called two names prior to hers and neither of those folks hung around long enough to be there for the drawing. So the thing about these drawings, at least at this place, you had to be present to win and not everyone comes to these for the same reasons. So it isn’t over until someone claims the prize.

I ended up...

I ended up babysitting the bear while the Mrs and the boy ended up spending some of the $500 gift card he won in the scratch off game, each of the first 100 people in line last year got a scratch off ticket that had a minimum of $10 off on a purchase and the top prize in the scratch off game was two $500 gift cards, so he won one of the two.

That bear was...

That bear was a big hit with Shortie as she had spotted that bear and inquired about the price on it a few weeks before the drawing. She found out then that the bear couldn’t be purchased and so she was counting on me to win it for her.
So the Mrs ended up the hero of Christmas for Shortie in 2017 and had she not been with me in 2016 and seen firsthand how people leave before the drawing she might have been inclined to leave when her name wasn’t called at the beginning of the drawing.

Well that is in...

Well that is in the past, and those are both good memories and stories but this year I am going to have to see what the other stores are offering since Palais Royal has shut their doors here. That was a lucky store for this family and I will miss being in line waiting to win there.

Do any of you...

Do any of you do the Black Friday thing and hit the door buster specials? I know I need to get some new blue jeans for work and while I only wear Wrangler 13MWZ jeans I may just have to buy whatever is on sale just so I have some jeans to work in and not care if they get guzbucked up.

I think Walmart has been known to sell some off brand of jeans on Black Friday in the past for about $10 a pair so if they have a deal like that I will be all over it like white on rice.

So between now...

So between now and early Friday I need to make a new plan, damn that Palais Royal for screwing me up on my Black Friday routine.

Until next time,
@sultnpapper

I hope you can see how ironic it looks... behaving like hyenas ...while you wrote all year long about educating people of their rights, political scams,etc,etc... In real life it's impossible to train sheep like that, but it works with humans....anyway.. I know a trick how to save 100%,not just 20 or 50... Just don't buy the shit that you don't need .. Peace! :))

Yes, the tablet purchase was an impulse buy for sure but it ended up being a Christmas present for the youngest boy and it served him pretty well. So while personally I didn't need it, it wasn't like it was a waste of money.
Clothes though are pretty much a necessity so I will have to find a place to get a deal on some work jeans, because that is something I need.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you and Lida have a great Thanksgiving.

Thanks!!....but we won't...:(

See? I knew you were a 1% er at heart! You had a 1% chance at the employee discount overall, and improved your odds considerably by sticking around. Nicely done.

I don't do black Friday. Maybe 15 years ago I decided I needed something at Best Buy and was there at 0415 (normal time for me) for a 0600 opening. The line was already around the store so I decided I could do without whatever and drove home.

I do shop judiciously on line. I'm already on a Kindle Fire at Amazon (to replace my first generation Fire) for Friday. It's a lot better machine and will total a little less than half what I paid for the original. And it's a full function tablet...

I would ordinarily stay completely away from all stores starting today but soon as I am done here I'm headed to WalMart. Because they are open. I'm entirely out of Bacon which is a pitiable condition at my place.

Their jeans do work well for 'work' grade clothing. I tend to wear them until the first worn through spot when I know they won't stand another wash. Then I wear them one more time for something like breaking down a transmission or patching the roof and throw them away.

So, I'm off to see the wizard. Sam will be pissed for leaving him behind, but I'll recover right away by taking him on his walk shortly after sun up. I'd like to wish you and yours the best Thanksgiving possible. Take a care!

Have a great Thanksgiving as well Tom. Being without bacon is a serious issue that needs to be corrected, I am sure Sam will understand, especially if you pour a little of that bacon grease on his bowl of dog food when you are done cooking.
I can't take credit for a 1%'er, but I was definitely a 2%'er that day, and I just knew that I was going to win that prize that morning, I didn't know how it was going to happen but it all worked out and the same for the Mrs. and the bear, she was determined that between the three of us one of us would win it for Shortie.

I've never understood why people go crazy on Black Friday, queueing outside a store from the early hours... though your post has given me some insight into the amazing bargains that are possible. And that bear! Haha.
I still think I would only go to a Black Friday opening if it was at one of the top outdoor gear stores and if I had a chance of winning an employee discount card for a year!

There can be some great deals on black Friday but since online shopping has really taken off there are even better deals online. I am not really a fan of it, but my wife has dragged me into it. She used to do the black Friday shopping with her sister but that ended a few years ago. Before it ended I would get up and drive over to Louisiana and hit the casino to win back what the wife was going to spend that day. More times than not I ended up winning enough to cover her shopping, so it was a good thing.
You might just want to pay attention to the black Friday stuff if they have such a thing in your area, you never know what kind of a deal could be had.
That bear was big and a big hit with Shortie, it made her Christmas for her.

Goodness - you must be lucky! I'm a loser when it comes to gambling, so I stay away from it.

It looks like the big bear is babysitting you Mr Papper!
We have black Friday here but cannot get near the stores as there are way too many people pushing and shoving, really is bad, so we do online buying on black Friday...if they have stock!
Have a good Thanksgiving and enjoy that Turkey :)

Thank you Lizelle. That turkey should be great, it is every year. So , I know Thanksgiving is a USA holiday, ya'll don't celebrate Thanksgiving the same day as we do, do you? Is your black Friday this Friday? I don't know anything about your area other than what I learn from you and what I learned in school 50 years ago.

We actually don't have a Thanksgiving holiday but of course all the retailers latched onto your black Friday a couple of years ago! It's tomorrow, some large stores have started having the sales over a couple of days to prevent that mad rush! We tried going to a large mall close by last year as they had huge specials but the crowd was absolutely crazy, it was quite a job getting out of there again, really not a good experience so that's a never again! Nothing like your experience with the now demised Palais Royal!
Have a lovely day with your family!

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

Very bittersweet post. First, let me congratulate on you past holiday wins and having such a neat family! It is my wish that you have a great Thanksgiving! That is also a very sharp looking bear in the selfie.

My condolences on your favorite store closing. I remember stores that were around when I was a kid. Kings, JJ Newberry's with its lunch counter, Two Guys, Robert Halls where my Dad would buy us boys new suits every Christmas and Easter. Those stores have all gone the way of history.

The chain of stores is still around and in business but the store nearest to us closed. So if I wanted to drive twenty minutes or so to the closest one I could but I was fond of that store and the people there.
There is two large retail shopping centers that opened up less than a half a mile from where they were located and the people in the area just sort of forgot about them, even though for twenty years they were the only store in the area where you could buy name brand clothes. That is how it goes though, people always like the shiny and new and that goes for stores as well.
Thanks for the congrats on the family and bear, both are very special in their own ways for sure.

Hi There bear babysitter , we dont have it to the extend you have it in your country. Weners a tv but online and with delivery is the smartest to do in Our case so Thats what it going to be I Think 😬

That was quite the bear, and I didn't mention it was a limited edition bear made just for that promotion they were running. They had smaller bears that could be purchased that matched it, and some of the proceeds from those sales went to fund some program for kids who's parents died serving in war or something like that, so we did also buy the smaller bear too. So Shortie got the Big Pappa bear and a little bear to go with it.
The movie "Home Alone" featured a toy store in it, and that store is the company that made the bears, so it was really a big deal to get that big bear.

I thought you might find this amusing. Due to an internal error of some kind ( still trying to find info) Our account values are insane. Your account value as I write this is $80,325,804,484.33. Now wouldn't that be nice?
I tried selling off some SBD into ETH but 2 SBD is still only 0.011 Eth, so not even worth the transaction fees. Would have been nice though :)

My first thought is that the US government printing office has been busy printing fiat and hyper inflation has set in here in the US but I just woke up and your reply is the first thing I have looked at.
So when the wife goes to the grocery store this morning to pick a gallon of milk and some bread it will probably cost her $2,000,000,000.00 for those two items.
The reason, the 2 SBD is still only 0.011 Eth is probably because Eth values might not be tied to the US dollar. I guess that could be a reason too, or it could be some kind of error, But wouldn't all the witnesses have to have their machines agree on these numbers?
Thanks for showing this to me, I seldom even look at my wallet, usually just on SBI Saturday when I purchase SBI for the give away.

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 25 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.
