Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 10/17/18> So much for an easy fall season… I am steadily falling behind.

in #dailydose6 years ago

Back in the late summer you might remember me saying how busy I had been and was looking forward at least for things to slow down a little and be able to enjoy doing more here on steemit. You remember that don't you? Well as it has turned out I am busier than a one armed man in an ass kicking contest and I have been taking some punches.

Only having a couple weeks left in this job has forced me to pull forward some orders that I had waiting for November. I had already made my sales number for the year which ends at the end of this month. So I was padding the books for what is normally a slower month by having customers run down inventory until the first of November so those would count for my 2019 sales numbers.

Since I am out of this job after 10/31/18 I have been working to get those orders moved up and placed so I will get my commissions on them as long as they are shipped by the end of the month.

One customer I met with on Tuesday had a job the wasn’t quite ready and naturally would have fallen in the mid November time frame, but when I told him what was taking place he said that really pissed him off. He reached in his file cabinet and pulled out the quote for that particular job, looked at it, and said “As much as you have helped me over the years I will gladly give you this order today and since this was only phase one of the two phases of the project, go ahead and double it since we don’t really have time to make an exact take off for the materials on phase two.” That sale right there went from $20K to $40K and that was a big surprise.

What made me feel even better was what he said next, “Without your help and expertise we wouldn’t have even been in a position to land this job. The factory guy who will end up taking your territory doesn’t deserve a nickels worth of commission seeing how you did all the work.”

Another appointment set for today called me on Tuesday and said he had to cancel our lunch for today. I told him that I had some news and wanted to give it to him in person but since that wasn’t going to happen I would just tell him while I had him on the phone.

He has a contract to do the landscaping and irrigation on 500 new houses with one builder that is starting in about 3 weeks with the first houses being ready to go. He gave me an order for 250 of the controllers on the project, if he had more room he said he would have taken more but space is at a premium so he bought the most expensive item he could that took up least space for storing.

He then made me an offer to do the design work for the irrigation on those systems. These are simple designs to do and it will be about 10 a week @ $50 a design all told that deal just for the first half of the project will amount to $12,500 for me and I can do those in about an hour for each one.

That will come in handy for sure, as the one job I have been interviewing for has a lower base salary than I would really like but the quarterly bonuses and commissions make it where it would be a pretty good bump over what I have been making annually. So if I take that job the first few months might be a little on the lean side in take him home pay. That $500 a week in design fees would really come in handy.

I am still entertaining offers and putting the word out and seeing just what is available and that job offer wouldn’t start until Jan.2nd so I still have to get through until then if I decide to take it and they aren’t pressing me for a commitment yet either and there is still room for some negotiations.

I know I could make that position work and they have some good product lines they rep and have had most of them for over twenty years so chances are those lines aren’t going anywhere unless they decide to drop them.

Plus, I had already asked the owner of that company if he had any problems with me doing designs on the weekends or evenings and he said, “what you do with your time is your business, not mine.” So that leaves the door wide open on just how much time I want to spend doing designs. I have a sixteen year old boy who has wanted to work and he just might have found him a part time job if I hustle up more design work.

I could teach him the basics in about one weekend and then give him some samples to practice with and let him give it a try. Naturally I would have to check each one but that is just a matter of a couple minutes versus an hour doing the computer work myself. So there is no telling just where this might lead too.

So, that is where I stand right now and there is no telling what today or the rest of the week will bring but I am cautiously optimistic that things will end up better for what has happened. So if my Daily Dose isn’t in your feed when you normally would find it I apologize and the same for how long it is taking me to reply to comments. To steal a line from the theme song of a movie from long ago, “it’s a long ways to go and a short time to get there.”

Until next time,
@sultnpapper

Sounds like you aren't moving to Arizona any time soon :) Good news indeed.

I kinda figured there might be some story like this. Doing a good job for people over the long haul tends to be rewarded, and you are getting back a little of what you've given. That's how it's supposed to work.

That would be really cool if you could establish a design company on the side. I really like that guys attitude. "Don't compete with us, but otherwise you are on your own."

This is going to be one of those times when it would just be terrific if you'd work yourself into a bit of a tax jam right at the end of the year. If your customers keep doubling and pushing up orders that could happen. One of those rare times when you could say 'Damn, I had to pay X taxes this year.' with a smile on your face.

Good news indeed. Thanks for sharing it.

Some how I read this and just didn't get the comment done, right now the stumbling block is the health insurance with that job. We are trying to get that piece worked out and if we can get through that it would be my preferred place to work. It is just the two owners of the business and one of the owner's wife who does the phones and the orders in the office.
I stopped paying income taxes years ago, in fact when we got this new HR lady here where I currently am she about flipped out when I told her that the company was no longer authorized to deduct withholding from my check. She said that they had to do it, so I told her , show me the law. She came back and said , "we are required too", My reply. "show me the law". She never could show me the law.
Finally, I told her that I would just fill out out the W2 withholding forms with "exempt" on the line. I have never had a problem with her since or the government for that matter.

All of that sounds very positive! Fantastic news! 😃

Yes, a couple of positive things at a time when I need some for sure.

Sounds like things are looking up @sultnpapper! That will be fun to involve your son! Good luck

Thank you. Little pieces of the puzzle trying to fall into place for sure.

Lots of stuff happening in your life now mr Papper! Good to hear about those companies who are loyal to someone who's given good service!
This may just be the start of a family business, something your son could take over if he enjoys it, who knows what the future holds!

I don't what the future holds for sure but I do know that the not knowing is very stressful.

You've built up a lot of loyalty in your customers! Which shows that a company's most important investment is its labour force. It's good to see you're not short of offers, with possible work for your son too.

Well I am not short on offers but there are some hang ups with the one that I would like best to go to work for but we are trying to work through those right now in negotiations. The design work is just some part time stuff to supplement, although it could grow into something bigger, especially if I can get the youngest boy interested in doing some design drafting.

howdy sir sultnpapper! well sir, it sounds all good to me. Everything is going to work out great it looks like and you'll be happy as a pig in slop on the new job! this is a great post.

That new opportunity isn't a done deal yet, there are still a couple things that we need to work out and I am optimistic we can but....
