Good evening fellow Steemians! Today I would like to share a couple of my though and inspirations regarding my design for the @curie curator group.

The results are in, and I ended up being runner up in the Curie Logo Design Contest.
Let me start off by saying a big congratulations to @overdye for walking away with first price, you did an amazing job, I love the design you came up with, and I am honored compete alongside you and everyone else that took part! Also, congratulations to @ufxpression for coming in third, yet another amazing design!

A little less conversation, a little more INSPIRATION please.

Original post about my design, I will try to expand on it a bit below.

First things first, I read the brief provided, as per the original Contest post made by @curie. This led me firstly to the very famous Marie and Pierre Curie, and secondly to the Curie Whitepaper. Below you can see these two delightful looking people, and their element of choice, Radium (Found in things that glow in the dark).

This was my original inspiration for the green colour scheme, although I ended up with a red version, simply based on the fact that the traditional iconic heart 💓 is mostly red.

Curie Whitepaper

If you look at the Whitepaper, you will see the following:

  1. To discover and reward undiscovered but exceptional content by persistent creators with limited success.
  2. To empower quality curators.
  3. To develop a curation community on Steem.
  4. To build communities.
  5. To serve as a community witness.

If this isn't some great inspiration, then I don't know what is. This is the partially the part of my research that inspired me to use a heart somewhere in my design, "spreading the love" and all that.

Upvote Icon

The other reason for the the heart shape, is based on the current upvote chevron that @curie was using as their logo. In my original post I tried to describe it as a 3D chevron falling over. This time, I made a handy (yet very ugly) gif to show exactly what I mean. The point of this being, that the upvote points out to you, the awesome author that got picked saying, "you are awesome!".

Everything else you see was purely based on design experience and knowledge of design principals. Throw in some hipster colours here, add some shading effect there, and Voilà!

Thoughts and Meaning

Shortly after the winners were announced in the Discord channel, @carlgnash posed the following question:

"...actually would love to hear any more thoughts you had on your design inspiration and vision for/about Curie, as well as what this means to you..."

I think I've answered the inspiration part by now, but I would like to say a little bit about the meaning. Let me start by saying, being able to compete in this contest has been an absolute pleasure. I love and support what curie stands for, and I believe groups like curie play a vital role in creating a beautiful and well functioning network for all of use to thrive in. Curie has been responsible for one of my all time favorite experience thus far on Steemit, and had me annoying people with trying to explain the concept of what they were for weeks.

That being said, I absolutely love the idea of being able to partake in a community like this, and furthermore, the idea that something I created might be used to represent a community like this. All-in-all this has been an absolutely wonderful and exciting experience for me, and I would again sincerely thank the @curie team and whomever else made this happen.

Congratulations @skippyza!!! This is some great work : )

Thank you @renascence, your support and comments are always much appreciated. :D

I always enjoy getting to read insight into the design process, thanks so much for this post! Your design was kind of polarizing, with some REALLY strong supporters/advocates and some people who thought it looked like a downvote symbol. In the end I thought it was really cool and had it in my top 3 on my own ballet as a Curie curator. I see the heart, and I see the love <3 You rock!

Thank you so much for the comment and support! It has been an absolute pleasure. I found that very interesting since I think @fraenk also pointed out the downvote, where as in my context (since Steemit has no direct downvote symbol, but rather the flag) I didn't see the downvote at all.

Of course once it was mentioned, I couldn't unsee it, but by that time it was too late. I completely get why some people would see that though, and of course why some people would be against that, since it could have a negative connotation. I guess it's just the magical (and somewhat tedious) world of design. :D

@skippyza you were flagged by a worthless gang of trolls, so, I gave you an upvote to counteract it! Enjoy!!

Congratulations @skippyza! You received a personal award!
