How curation rewards are allocated
I had to dig deep into Steemit to find more details on curation rewards. The help files on Steemit gives you an overview on curation and author rewards, but not like the detail I found today. So let me share what I found.
On day 7 you get paid for your post. If the post value is $10.00, it will be split 75/25 or $7.50 to the author and $2.50 to curators.
The payment to curators is split depending when upvote was made. Here is what I found on Steemit. Curation rewards according to @stephcurry:
Each post reward is split 75% author, 25% curator
After 30 minutes and more = ENTIRE portion of that 25% goes to the curator PERIOD.
27 minutes and 30 minutes past the time the post has been made live, will be split 90/10. 90% curator and 10% author.
15 minutes and 27 minutes of when a post is created. 50% curator and 50% goes to the author.
3 minutes and 15 minutes after post publication. 10% curator, author receives 90%
3 minutes after the post has been up. 0% curator, 100% author
What the article does not show is how the upvotes are split between all the upvoters in a specific time slot.

In practise I have not tried to time my upvotes because it will take too much time to make the perfect vote. You can use steemvoter.com and set it up to vote a specific time. This is a very handy tool I am using. The default is set at 20 min, but you can set it at any time you like.
The curation rewards calculation is very complex. I have decided not the worry about my timing on every vote I make. All I do is take note of the details above and make sure I make an upvote before the first 7 days of a post.

To be honest, the whole thing is too complicate to follow in detail. Usually I try not to vote more than ten times a day. If I really like something I am voting.

Yes - I am trying a few different strategies. At the moment I am trying to upvote between 15 minutes and 30 minutes on posts that I know will make over $100. The only problem is sometimes these posts end up with 500 upvotes so the Curation reward is divided between 500 people. I have tried a few other strategies (Voting in 1st 10 minutes, Voting after 30 minutes) and and all I ever make is about .001 SP for my upvotes. I am working to get my Steem Power back to 100 % so that I can see how I do when I only Vote at 100 %. I do much better as an Author than I do as a Curator. I also tried Resteeming several very good posts and made zero SP from that strategy.
Interesting strategies.
