Working Title (MSP Creative Writing Curation)

in #curation5 years ago (edited)

I'm just a writer, playing a writer, disguised as another writer.

It is a common custom in our lands that when a person dies, his or her coffin will be covered in drapes, black and white, that will represent the person's doings in his or her lifetime. Each black drape will represent a bad doing, each white one will represent a good doing.

Drapes by @raikuhen takes an interesting concept, that at a funeral, drapes are used to signify the quality of a person's life. Raikuhen then took that concept and turned it into a story with some fascinating moral implications.

They promised each other they’d celebrate this day here on their beach right before his first chemo session. There was no fear in his voice, but she could see it in his eyes, which turned away from hers. And she was grateful for that, because she didn’t want him to see the horror in her eyes. They’ll buy cold beers and drink them on the sand, with waves lapping at their feet. In the evening, after Mark fainted and fell from his chair, he made her swear she’ll be here this day, no matter what. That became his code phrase, whenever he thought of something she should do in the event…’you must do it, no matter what’.

Promise by @marie-jay is a heartwrenching exploration of the promises we make to those who are dying, and the promises that we make to ourselves.

And just before you break like dawn in a blood red sky
let it be known that you lived as solitary note in a sea of silence

Luminance by @tygertyger is brief but so, so pretty. I adore the uplifting message about the impact of our lives on others and the earth, when that message can occasionally be negative. I especially love her use of alliteration.

One rebel carried a sharpie with him everywhere
and wrote "the tv is lying to you" in bathroom stalls.

One Rebel by @caitlinjohnstone is a reminder that we can all do small things to rebel, that we do them on a regular basis, every day. That rebellion is important even when it's hard.

The beast asleep
seems quieter.

Sleeping Tiger by @marlyncabrera is another brief piece, but it has such a strong message in it's simplicity.
