Hong Kong Snapshot (57) Lai Tak Tsuen, a public estate which look like an adyss

Last time I introduced the Lok Wah Estate. Today, I will bring you to a very special Public estate in Hong Kong with cylindrical design – The Lai Tak Tsuen.

Lai Tak Tsuen is on the hill of Tai Hang at Hong Kong Island. Around the estate are all residential skyscraper with over HKD$30,000 per sq. ft. making Lai Tak Tsuen look strange in the area. But in 1976 when the estate was built, it is the most expensive public estate in HK. And it should be the first public estate with bathtub. Some units can even watch the view of the Victoria Harbour. We could say it’s the luxury public estate in HK.

The cylindrical design of Lai Tak Tseun attracted a lot of HK movies, TV, MTV and Advertisement to take place at. In Hollywood movie “Ghost in the Shell”, you can find that Scarlett Johansson goes to Lai Tak Tsuen to look for her mother.

But it’s not easy to go in now. There is now security in all public estate in HK. So I played a game of hide and seek with the three securities.

The house I went is Tak Tsuen House. I saw a security was watering flowers so I quickly went into the house. And then I heard a voice, “Sir where are you going?” I answered her “photo shooting” and she drove me away… Then I walk around the house and I found a back door! This time I even skipped the lift and just walked up to the uppest 27th floor. When I arrived the 23th floor, oh no! A security was sitting there. OK! I acted like normal and just passed by him. Ha! Passed!

I kept going up to the 27th floor. There were still steps to the roof top. I kept going and oh no! One more security! I quickly went down and luckily, he seemed didn’t discover me. Yes! I could finally take my photos!

Finally, the 26th floor…

The cylindrical design of the house capture sun light to the high level. Each unit is facing each other. I am sure the residents were getting along well 40 years ago. But today people are getting cold and we can’t see the scene anymore. When going down, I saw the design of floors are repeating seems without end. Even the stairs are the same.

Going back to the low floors, natural light couldn’t go and there’s a gloomy feeling. When I came back to the 8th floor, I saw the security of the 23th floor again! He started to suspect me and keep looking back! Again, I quickly went down to the 4th floor and luckily again he just let me go. Finally I took the photo of the ground floor. If there was no maintenance, the photo should be much better!

In the past HK, we had a lot of buildings with different feature, even the public estate! But now, buildings everywhere look the same, the same flats, same houses, same shopping malls. I don’t know how HK will look like 40 years later.

Back when it was built it was probably quite an innovate design but now it looks a little dated
