Mark Zuckerberg the founder and CEO of Facebook, the biggest social network and one of the corporations that rules the internet nowadays, in his traditional early personal challenge annoucement post, mentioned the centralization x decentralization question in technology and encryption and cryptocurrencies as important counter-trends against a small number of big tech companies concentration and government surveillance.

After explaining his personal challenge tradition annoucements, Mark Zuckerberg describe how he views the actual technology situation and point encryption and cryptocurrency as counter-trends that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people's hands, but with the risk of being harder to control. He declared:

I'm interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies (encryption and cryptocurrency), and how best to use them in our services.

This statement could impact all the cryptocurrency market and specially the cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects involving social media, including Steem and Steemit, the first initiative in this field, currently active and running, ready to launch the Smart Media Tokens (SMT) soon.

Notice that Mark Zuckerberg did not mention the blockchain technology, the spine of all this transformation and the code who runs the revolution we live now.

The mountain has moved

Since it was launched, Steem blockchain, Steemit and Steemit, Inc creators ever target Reddit as the main competitor, proclaiming the advantages of rewarding social media users with cryptocurrency in an open source, decentralized, immutable and quick blockchain environment, free of censorship, advertising and fees. But now, with the giant and omnipresent Facebook announcing that would start moving (or even did its first steps already), I think all this crypto social network mixing idea got serious.

As I saw this unespected refering from one of the top rulers of the technology world I remembered the plot of Akira Kurosawa's movie Kagemusha, where the landlord mantra was "A mountain does not move". This thinking is inspired in the ancient Chinese martial classic The Art of War describing ideal troop movements: "Swift as the wind, quiet as a forest, attacking like a fire, immovable as a mountain."

Now that the Facebook mountain has moved how would behave the Steem creators Dan and Ned, aside with the development and marketing staff of Steemit, Inc? Under that giant corporation shadow they (and all of us steemians) could be seen as daring and smart pioneers who will defy and threaten Mark's plan, innovators whose inventions can be absorbed and controled into a corporation ruled system or simple way dust to be easily smashed and forgotten from the internet History :-) But don't worry, I believe that the STEEM and SBD prices will reflect the battle between these visions sending us a signal of what people think about it.
