Why crypto is (probably) doomed...

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago

I am no cryptocurrency expert. In fact, the mere thought of me being a bitcoin expert is enough to LOL at.

ECONOMICS

But I do know a little about economics and finance and I have always been fascinated by money. Not in the sense that I want more of it (that too) But the mere fact I guess that you can hand someone some pieces of paper and get pretty much anything you want.

This kind of money is called fiat money. It means that there is no intrinsic value to the money itself, or it is negligible. Back in the day, when people used to have silver and gold money, now that seems to make more sense, because those metals have intrinsic value.

You can actually use them for something. But still, they are also a bit fiaty, because I mean, you are probably not gonna go and melt the gold you got for your sheep or whatever and use it for a filling in your tooth.

I guess the only real non-fiat situation is where you barter. In other words, I give you three sheep for one month’s accommodation, or I give you 10 loaves of bread in exchange for 1 kg of coffee beans. Some people still do this to avoid tax I think.

Actually I think I have done it too. You can exchange services too.

Like I can say, OK, I will translate your website for you from German to English, if you give me a laser teeth whitening treatment.

ASTERIX AND OBELIX

Funny enough, I remember I think in economics class we learned about this one culture where they used these huge boulders for money.

Kind of like the one that Obelix carries in the cartoon books Asterix and Obelix, you know?

Why did they do that? I don’t know, I think maybe so it would be harder to steal money. So I guess different money systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

Some are better at solving certain challenges associated with money, whether it be liquidity, making it harder to steal, making it easier to carry, etc.

Well, for me cryptocurrency is kind of cool I guess, because it retains the positive elements of the gold standard (only a limited amount available, countries can’t just increase the amount of cryptocurrency to try and artificially stimulate the economy).

Also, at the same time, the big ones like bitcoin are becoming more and more liquid.

I see a major danger though.

SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Well, the whole idea behind monetary systems is to make money as scarce as possible. That is why they often raise interest rates) so that the government can control the money supply. So there's no way they will allow crypto to go ahead the way it is now.

Even despite all the benefits...think about how hard it is to steal.

Almost impossible unless more than half of bitcoin owners are in on it, I am led to believe. But with the new cryptocurrencies its probably impossible.

And it is easy to “carry” – you don’t need to carry anything around except your passwords!

INTERESTING HISTORICAL FACT ABOUT MONEY

Rai stones are circular disks with a hole in the middle. The stones vary widely in size: the largest are 3.6 meters (12 ft) in diameter, 0.5 meters (1.5 ft) thick and weigh 4 metric tons (8,800 lb).

The largest rai stone is located on Rumung island, near Riy village.[5] Smaller rai stones might have a diameter of 7–8 centimetres.

The extrinsic (perceived) value of a specific stone is based not only on its size and craftsmanship, but also on its history.

If many people—or no one at all—died when the specific stone was transported, or a famous sailor brought it in, the value of the rai stone increases by reason of its anecdotal heft.

Rai stones were, and still are, used in rare important social transactions, such as marriage, inheritance, political deals, sign of an alliance, ransom of the battle dead or, rarely, in exchange for food.

Many of them are placed in front of meetinghouses or along pathways. The physical location of the stone may not matter—though the ownership of a particular stone changes, the stone itself is rarely moved due to its weight and risk of damage.

OWNERS' NAMES

The names of previous owners are passed down to the new one. In one instance, a large rai being transported by canoe and outrigger was accidentally dropped and sank to the sea floor.

Although it was never seen again, everyone agreed that the rai must still be there, so it continued to be transacted as genuine currency.

What is important is that ownership of the rai is clear to everyone, not that the rai is physically transferred or even physically accessible to either party in the transfer.

Great post @pjcswart. I think we are seeing the first signs of the end of paper money. Steem is contributing to this, like Bitcoin and other crypto. This new age of money is making people think of the true value of that piece of paper in your pocket. The more questions people ask the more they will move their money to crypto.

Good point, thanks for commenting!!

That's so interesting about the Rai stones - I've never heard of them before!

Personally although I'm wildly optimistic about cryptocurrency, I can't help but wonder what the government will pull over time to put a stop to it all.

But I also truly hope that cryptos continue their huge rise in popularity!

crypto is much like rai stones. you write your name on the blockchain instead of a stone. 👨‍🌾 👩‍🍳 I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend! Its gonna be interesting you are right.

Very informative! Resteemed!

Thanks!!!👨‍🌾 👩‍🍳 I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Much appreciated! U also

You are welcome. How was it? 😀 😃 😄 😁 😆 Thanks again for sharing...and don't forget to keep steeming OK?

Interesting read thanks @pjcswart we trade in all kinds of things, past/present and future.

Moving forward in new technology hopefully it will help people worldwide that do not have banking facilities on hand.

I agree that is a key concern for so many people. The unbanked masses. 👨‍🌾 👩‍🍳 I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Thanks how was it? LOL. 😀 😃 😄 😁 😆 Thanks again for sharing...and don't forget to keep steeming OK?

Why barter should be taxed?

It implies no money and no fiat benefit.

The value of the good can be perceived as a need for taxing but not thinking is ok, especially when you trade food or services.

Also, i see that gifts (real ones not the ones that real avoid things) are taxed. It is just as stupid as lot of other things they invent to tax.

No system or thing is perfect. So we must agree to take and use the one with few flaws and disadvantager.

But the fear for bitcoin world it could be true. It depends on how much governments will involve. And thinking at how greedy they are, they will. Even they say they'll ban it and other bad things. The technology it really interest them and the value that they can get also. So, they could come behind major coins as a big part of them and influence it in their way. They are best at doing that.

We'll see how we people will have a stand against that in time.

Cheers

Yeah how can you tax gifts, doesn't make any sense unless there are loopholes or something. Fiat may become the new crypto in future, harder to regulate. People may start their own currencies, as is kind of the plan on steemit.👨‍🌾 👩‍🍳 I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend!

It is an interesting future.

We may live or not to see it. Depends how fast it grows.

Here on currencies and with other stuff like electric cars and banning fossil fuel. I made a post recently regarding that too.

But, at how things moves now, let's hope in 20-30 years we'll see a big change, not just fights of politicians.

Tks

Yeah I don't know really what to think about politics. Watching Designated Survivor and the moment and getting the feeling that it may be a necessary evil in some way. What do you think about banning fossil fuel, do you think that is a good idea? I haven't quite made up my mind about it. 😐 😑 😯 😦 😧 😮 😲 😵 I hope you have a WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

Well, from my pov is kinda late. But, instead of not doing anything, we may give a chance to next generations.

Although, i don't see all the problems solved, because are many things left that pollute like he*l. China was last time and maybe is the most polluted country, then India and others.

That bad things are already done and nobody can take them back.

Something it will happen at some point if we not destroy part of the world with that stupid aberrant wars.

Well, some things are happening and few people know also about another war that is already in action for so many years. Geoclimatic war... with climate engineering. things like HAARP and other places. But this are other topics. Also, sometimes they are all related in a way.

You can also see the good work made by Elon Musk... a genius of our times. And the fight that big corporations do against him.

Thanks for the weekend ;-)

Thanks for this. I heard some say that Elon Musk is benefiting excessively from climate change subsidies. Thanks for being an inspiring Steemian and connecting on here! 🤡 🤠 😏 😒 😞 I hope you have a wonderful day!

And to more chats like that.

Haters will always make waves. Elon Musk is a genius for our days. And what he gave to people not many can. If he is profiting from something it may be for having money to go on or to do other things...

I can't know for sure what is behind. He is the only one who knows. But he gave a lot to humanity so commentators will always be. Some may be the governments and space companies who doesn't want him to achieve what he wants with his projects.

Eh... we know only what we see...

Be well and cheers!
