Judge Sued Over Trying To Stop Public Defender Who Was Working Too Hard For His Clients

A judge in Texas is being sued, over allegations that he refused to assign cases to a particular public defender, because that public defender was allegedly known to work hard and put up a good fight for his clients.
The lawyer, Drew Willey, says that the judge told him directly that he spent too much time trying to defend his clients.
That judge allegedly refused to give Willey new cases and took away some of his clients, because he was putting in too much effort to try and give them a quality legal defense.

Willey is being represented by a nonprofit organization known as Civil Rights Corps.
Willey wants to be able to put up a good fight for his clients and in his lawsuit he is asking for the judge to be barred from retaliating against him.

The judge has a different side to the story of course, and he claims that he wasn't intentionally trying to not assign Willey cases. According to the judge, Willey had too many cases that were unresolved, prompting the judge to assume that he might be too overwhelmed with work to take on any new challenges.
Putting in the work
If more people in the country had fair and quality legal representation, perhaps the nation wouldn't be saddled with the largest prison population on earth, because there wouldn't be as many people being pressured into pleading guilty.
According to a previous survey that was commissioned by the Texas bar several years ago, many judges find that a lawyers reputation for working quickly and moving cases through the system promptly was a major factor in deciding who to appoint to cases. They might have a habit of wanting to get the case through the clogged system quickly, but that comes as a detriment to the victims and those who are seeking true justice.

thx karen 👍😄
Your welcome ! and thank you for your support !👍😀
If this is true and if the recording exists proving it is true, then that judge should be held accountable!
I noticed how the lawyer was asking for the judge to be barred from retaliating against him. That means judges can retaliate against other offers of the court even when the other other officers of the courts (lawyers, et al.) are in the right! In any other company who has a Human Resources department, there are usually policies in place automatically prevent retaliation.
In the legal system, retaliation = damaged reputation + potentially high fines, thus causing major ripple effects for those involved.
If this lawyer is really working that hard for his clients, WE NEED MORE GOOD LAWYERS DOING THE RIGHT THING LIKE THIS GUY! This is proof that when you do the right thing by your client, it will be made known far and wide.
A very interesting article on law enforcement issues. May get the best solution to real seekers of justice. Thanks for sharing @doitvoluntarily.
Wow, it is hard to believe that this actually occurred! Judges are supposed to be impartial, clearly this is not the case in this court!
Oh for the love of God. What the fuck is wrong with this world.
The Public Defense System in the US is a travesty. It is extremely under funded, public defenders are under paid and generally are over worked, with a huge case loads to the detriment of the people they represent. Kudos the the PD that fought hard for his cases, I hope he wins his lawsuit against that judge!
it's natural to do it, because it is one of his jobs to defend clients, and he is a benevolent lawyer, not defending people who have money alone. may he succeed always
Good post @doitvoluntraily
