I Can’t Believe Anything They Say.......steemCreated with Sketch.

in #contest5 years ago (edited)

If the words “I fell asleep when I was getting tattooed” has ever come out of their mouth—they’re disqualified.

Whew! I’m glad that opening sentence is finally over, I always get hung up on that part. I’m over here doing something like trying to make sure the whole sentence fits on the front page of your feed even though it’s not always possible or I’m going back and forth with myself ‘is it too short? is it too long? Too serious, not serious enough?’ Maybe I’m focusing too much on the opening sentence. I like the kind that are #funny and serious at the same time, like cracking a joke but not really. Step two is learning how move passed it. baby steps As I was saying...

Tattoos hurt!

Those of you who have seen my #art work have noticed sometimes my hands or my arms are in the picture, they’re covered in black/gray. The tattoos continue up my arms and don’t stop at my shoulders, they work their way all the way down to my waist. I don’t have any below my waist and none on my neck or face. Out of all of them, the tops of my hands hurt the least. Coincidentally, they also swelled up the most. My right arm is all oceanography, I’ve always had this lust/infatuation for the sea. I have two Man O’ War on the inside of my right elbow. That arm has great whites and hammerheads, eels, all kinds of aggressive ocean creatures, sea snakes, etc. but nothing hurt as bad as these—not even my stomach:

@foxyspirit is hosting this Tattoo Shop/Contest. (I hope that link is finally working) If you know the difference between a tattoo machine and a tattoo gun, head over there and enter her contest—there’s #steem up for grabs.

These man o’ war took about three and a half hours to complete, start to finish, back in 2008. My right forearm was done by Noelin Wheeler in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. This particular sitting was about the third or fourth time I’d got together with Noelin, our previous appointment was my hand. Besides, at that point, I’d been getting tattoos for about 20 years—I’m familiar with the chair. The man o’ war were different—they were a different kind of sting.

He cleaned me up when he was finished, added a fresh layer of aquaphor and wrapped plastic around my arm—you know the drill. Before I left, he wanted to plug me in to his calendar book, he told me how much money I owed him but I couldn’t count the money in my pocket, they all looked like $1’s. Noelin asked me my phone number so he could pull me up in his appointment book, the same number we always use to plug me in, this time was different—I didn’t know my phone number. I didn’t know my own phone number and I couldn’t count the money in my pocket.

He told me it was normal, “don’t worry about it,” that I was experiencing an adrenaline withdrawal or overdose, one or the other. He said my adrenaline had been peaked for so long I was exhausted and just needed some rest—good thing it was late! He scrolled back through his appointment history and found my phone number for me, he helped me count my money, too, I couldn’t see it. I went down stairs to get in my car to drive home.

I couldn’t get my key in the ignition. I unlocked the car with the key fob, I was able to get inside the car but I couldn’t get the key to fit in the ignition—I couldn’t start the car. The longer I sat there messing with the key the more I realized I couldn’t see anything on the dash of the car. Driving was out of the question.

I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes—major mistake! I instantly became nauseous and got out of the car so I could stand up or else I would’ve been sick. There was an Arby’s in the parking lot, I’ve never liked Arby’s, even back then I couldn’t stand it but I needed food, something, stat! Something to snap me out of this funk.

I walked inside the restaurant and didn’t see anyone else in there so I walked up to the counter to order food. There’s a younger girl working the counter “are you ready to order?” She asked. I was staring at the menu, I knew it was the menu but the blur wouldn’t go away, I couldn’t read it. I explained to her what was going on and how I couldn’t see. I told her I just wanted a sandwich and a coke, “can you help me, please?” She rang me up but I still couldn’t see my money—I handed her my wallet. She handed it back to me and a few minutes later she brought me my food.

As soon as I started eating the sandwich and took a big drink of sugar, I began snapping out of it. By the time I was done eating, I could see again, I made it to the car and knew how to start it.

No issues getting back to the house, I was still feeling the effects of the tattoo but at that point it wasn’t in my head anymore. Finally I was experiencing the typical burning/stinging feeling, the one that’s intensified with each hot shower for about a week. Man ‘o war stings are intense! The inside of the elbows hurt, that’s a painful spot for tattoos, the upper-back, lower-back, front, all over, it all hurts after an hour and a half. By hour three it’s a game of watching the clock and hoping the artist is close to finished, “how much longer do you think?” When you hit the fourth hour and know you only have one hour left, it just hurts, none worse or less painful anywhere on the body—that’s about the time they all hurt the same.

Beautiful tattoo! Well done artist and well done to you for putting up with the pain!

I like to watch a lot of oceanic documentaries and the last one I watched had the Man O' War jelly. Very interesting creature, works great with the other top of the line predators on your arm.

I only have tattoos on my forearms, nothing on the outside... yet...

My husband is undergoing some work on his upper arm, has 3 elements. He said the ghoul was feeling a bit tough but the werewolf was something else and his body was moving on its own. And he only has the outline done. I will share a pic after.

You know the fine debate where people say the outline hurts more than the filling or its the filling that hurts more? For all of my tattoos, it was the filling that hurt the most. The outline was a breeze. But then when it came to my back. It was something else. Everything hurt. But then the lower back... oh man.... the horse on the left that is fully finished, all that color and detail. hoooo mama eggs and toast! LOL for some points the outlined hurt more. I never experienced it like you but I can say that I get pretty spanking hungry after the session.

The pain we go through for some beautiful art, eh? And then, we do it again ^_^

Yeah... that's all i got for pics... it's his bathroom not mine. Don't mind the surroundings lol I firgured if he posted on fb... well.. it's up for grabs XD

I was thinking about the one on your back that you said is a tribute to your mother. I would like to see that if you are willing to share it. My husband has one for his dad as well. It was his first tattoo actually, will be 5 yrs he's gone in November. He never got to meet our last child, Frankie.

I’m going to respond to both of your comments here. Check me out being all resourceful with my cresourse redits.. resource credits, whatever they’re called. 👍🏿

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you liked this article, foxy, thank you for inspiring me. I just barely learned of this contest yesterday and was immediately draw to enter it—great idea, mama eggs and toast! 😉

I agree with the shading being much more intense than the outline. My opinion there’s a couple of factors. Outline is the start and, to me, it takes about an hour to start hurting. Well.. most outlines are done by then. But the shading, the 8-24 needle bundle in the machine packing in layer after layer of ink, then wiping the blood away, re-lubing it just to get drilled again. Yeah whatever, I’m a sissy then, it frikkin hurts!

God bless Danny’s dad. Eh, that’s the inside of his elbow, yeah? Oh mmaaannnnn!! Danny’s dad, what was his trade? A hard hat and boots, I’m assuming he had a specific trade. I could guess a miner with the light on his hard hat but I had a light on mine many times, too, I’m not a miner. Very nice tattoo, Danny! <—see he gets that, Por favor. It looks like a whole bunch of ouch. In my opinion, his dad knows Frankie. 😉

Oh man, yes, my whole entire back from my waist to just above my shirt line on my neck. 30 +/- hours.. ouch! I’d love to show you, too, maybe I’ll come show you on discord and then eventually work my way up to showing the community. It’s a big one! It would take so long to guide you through it, I think it would require a long post, each line has and dot has purpose. “Baby steps.” April, this year, she will have been gone 6 years, she’s the only parent I ever met. RIP Sheila Jo.

Happy Wednesday, foxy! Thank you for initiating this contest. We all know how difficult it is to talk about ourselves.

The tattoo is inside his elbow area/forearm. His dad was a miner but also a great gardener. The boot is the same boot at his cottage where he would grow flowers in, had moss on it and everything. The flowers are one of the types he grow and they bloomed beautifully. One of Danny's favorites. The boot lace has a fishing lure at the end as Danny has a lot of memories fishing with his dad when he was young. A lot of memories put it in. Even the writing 'Have a nice life' was something he always said. I remember the first time he told me that, I found it so weird as I was just stepping outside and told me that and I thought, I'm not taking off and leaving permanently. Why is he telling me that? But I grew to find out it was something he just said.

RIP to both these beautiful people, your mom and Danny's dad. Peaceful times are what they deserve :)

Happy wednesday to you as well! xx

What a great visual!

Eh, did you click on your Tattoo Shop/Contest on my page? For some reason, when I click on the one I linked, it brings me back to my own page. Weird, huh? Does it do that when you click it?

But the link I attached here works! Odd.

edit I fixed it. For some reason when I wanted the link to be the title of your post, it routed us back to my article, strange. But I named it “this” and now it works.

That's really weird. But glad yo fixed it. Small Steemit glitch?

I 💩 you not, my dad has fallen asleep getting tattooed. Multiple times. That man can fall asleep anywhere. He actually has a small black dot of ink between two fingers on one hand because Big Mike got tired of having no one to talk to. That perked him back up. I think he finds the sound soothing. I definitely didn't inherit his tolerance for pain. 😜

Love the ocean theme. I can only imagine how bad that spot hurt. My ribs were pretty rough, but it still came in under three hours. My fruits and veggies owl on the side of my calf was pretty brutal between hours 3-4. My body was definitely hitting the flight response, though I've never had it quite as bad as you! Glad the Arby's girl gave you a hand.

Nice to see some great stories on this one. Great idea @foxyspirit!

I can see your dad being that way actually, a tattoo gun does have a nice hum to it lol.

I thought it was too! It also connects people in a different way too.

Good morning plantstoplanks! Your dad makes me want to vomit in my own mouth! He’s disqualified!! Ha!

the end!

👍🏿 Nah.. I’ve heard that from more than one person and I just can’t make sense of it. Not many, maybe only 4-5 people that I know actually swear by it “I fall asleep every time I’m the chair.” I’m like “well here’s a big F you that’ll fit right in your pocket! Sleep on that.” Lucky, I envy those people.

Ribs, agreed, ouch! I can’t relate with anything on the legs, I’ll take your wOrd for it. I’m just a sissy for needles I guess, a sissy for tattoo machines, whatever the case, I’ve never found one where I walked out like “man, I didn’t feel anything!” Rather, I’m in the chair sweating with clammy hands thinking “what did I just get myself into?!”

Thanks for stopping by @plantstoplanks!

Haha, yeah he's a beast. I think the sleepy times were during his back piece, which is somewhere around 30 hours worth of work all together maybe (could be more, but definitely not less)? I can't remember, I just know there were a lot of sessions on that one. He said the worst spot for him was the outside bony spot on his elbows. No snoozing there! The only other big area he has clean is his abdomen (so he can't attest to the ribs) and the upper part of his legs. I'm sure if Big Mike lived closer he might exhaust whatever flesh real estate he's got left in no time!

I would say have a good day, but you and @puravidaville are living in paradise so I think that's a foregone conclusion. 🌴😉

Howdy sir dandays! first of all, do you know how many days it's been since you sent me a morning update? Thanks alot man. As soon as I got addicted to them you jerked them away from me like a cruel dungeon master!
And because of that I lost track of you for a couple days and now look where we are, I missed the voting time limit on this post. dang.
But about this post...I know nothing about tattoos but they sound like a real pain to go through, that effect that happened to you was amazing, I'd never heard of that!
Ok, I'll head over to the next one so I don't miss it's voting time limit also!

You’re too good to me, Janton! I see I have three responses from you, it sure is nice to be missed! Actually, I’ve been working on a drawing since Saturday and it actually has me pretty focused—away from my normal routine. I’m hoping to have it finished by the end of the weekend. Fingers crossed.

About the pain, that’s the only tattoo that ever did that to me, one and only time. Jellyfish hurt!

See you in a click..

About you missing the voting period.. you made the last 4 or 5 so you were due to miss one. Ha!

Howdy sir dandays! yeah I missed you alright. I have people ya know. Generally when someone disrespects me I send some people over to remind them of their poor choices but I don't think they go to Costa Rica. lol..

Jellyfish hurt. Got that one noted. If I ever decide to get tattoos. Thank you for that. Plus the very entertaining post where everyone was either identifying with your situation or screaming NO! Don't drive! lol. That was wild.

Artwork huh? All week. Aren't you getting frightfully behind on everything like commenting or it's just not a priority. Why should it be if the writing is on the wall for Steemit?

Are you one of the Steem Monster freaks? They say it can keep going without steemit, as long as the blockchain is up.
It's great to hear from you again!

I’m too chickenshit to ever get a tattoo lol

They’re definitely not for everyone. I think zero tattoos is equally as sexy as fully tattooed!

Thanks for stopping by @anonymity5.

That's an intense story! I've never heard of anyone reacting to a tattoo like that. Has it happened to you since then?

#powerhousecreatives

I appreciate you using “intense” to describe the story, I was really hoping for that because it was an intense night! Nope, that’s the only time that happened.

Fascinating, right? I have them up and down me, I even have just as much ink on the same spot on the inside of my opposite arm, they hurt, sure. But nothing like that jellyfish.

Thanks for stopping by @mattifer.

I don't have any tattoos of my own, but I'd like to have the experience some day. Not with ink though. I'd like to have a tattoo artist use the gun (or machine, I don't know the difference) to do all the same work of a tattoo, but without adding any ink. I admire them on others, but I'm just not that into any one thing that I would want it on my body FOREVER. :-) I'm incredibly curious about what it feels like though.

Beautiful piece and they hurt indeed. Steam punk kitty was done by a good friend in 1 session of 16h.. Never again that long. In Belgium there was once a girl who ended up with a face full of stars. When her dad came back mad, she blamed the artist and said she fell asleep. She was supposed to have 3 but kept asking for more... She ended up with 32 and had to admit she asked for it and didn't fell asleep. Congrats on the win :)

Hello there! Thanks for that story, 32 huh? Yeah.. I’m not a fan of tattooing my face, I’ve seen some that are subtle enough and even sexy, at times, but the majority of them look like a bad idea to me—but who am I?!

Thanks for competing in the tattoo contest, that was a fun one! I’m surprised I snuck in a victory with all of those images and great stories, yours included. 😉

Thanks for stopping by @amy-Goodrich.

I agree. No face or neck tattoos for me either. Unless I run out of space hehehe.

Dang!! Talk about Traumatizing!! Lol. I have never felt that, that’s crazy. I have Don’t a couple 5 hour sessions, 4 and a 6. I do admit I do feel funny afterworlds but I just through it was because I hadn’t eatin’ for those last few hours. So guess what I did....I went and got my grub on. Lol.

I was going to to this fun little contest but I just haven’t had time. I might be able to whip something together real fast.

My Linetrash Tattoo was the absolute worst as far as pain. Left rib cage = OUCH!! I just couldn’t get myself to settle down at all.

Good morning brother Splatts, happy hump day. Man, I saw some of those images you posted lately, what’s all of the frosty stuff on your face??

You showed me that line tattoo, I think it’s a great one to show off for this contest, as soon as I saw this one, I got on it. I’m just bummed I didn’t see it until 4 days later. That line one, though, oh my gosh! It’s got so many layers of ink and being on the rib cage right there, I’m certain that was just as painful as any tattoo ever.

You don’t have time to enter the contest because, what? People need lights or something??

Thanks for stopping by @jlsplatts! And thank you kindly for the Resteem my friend.

I worked on it for 5 min last night before it was book time and bed time for the kids. Then I go down right after that. Lol. I will hopefully have it out today sometime. Fingers crossed lol

I’m typing this in between sets in the gym. Gotta go

Dude that’s crazy about not being able to see even the numbers on money!

Hey what’s up man? Yeah, I saw that you gave it to me but when I clicked on it, it was gone. I’m glad you put it back. Did you say “wasn’t that bad.” <— another one?! Yeah I guess it just me, I’m a sissy. Crazy right? I couldn’t see or think straight for a good 15 minutes it seemed.

Thanks a lot for stopping by @geneeverett. I have the inside of my biceps done and you won’t see me say “wasn’t that bad,” nope! Ouch!

Yeah, but why the man o’ war? Why not a jelly fish or something? I didn’t even know there was a difference but you did and I want to know why… otherwise great entry Mr. Days! I like all of your tattoos for the record.

I didn’t have any particular sea life in mind, other than the octopus. But I only had that in mind because that’s how I shopped for my artist, it took me 5 years to find Noelin. I would walk in tattoo shops wherever I was working around the US, “can you do an octopus?” Sometimes they couldn’t, most times they had previously and I was able to check out their designs.

I finally found the artist when I was in Vegas in 2008. The octopus was first and then it was marine life after that, nothing specific, we would go back and forth with ideas. About the third or fourth sitting, we were working on my hand. He showed me a magazine, remember those things? Yeah, I still had a flip phone back then (an LG with the full keyboard), anyway.. magazine.. there was a (one) picture of a man o’ war, “check this out.” It looked huge on the page! It was all bright with pinks and reds, blues, I loved it. So, within the next couple of visits he free handed those on me. I meant to mention how bad it hurt, did you get that?

Thank you for asking beautifullest, I guess I should’ve explained the why.

iheartu all the time @puravidaville.

Thank you for explaining! That’s a cool story all on its own.
