POLIS: The Trial of Socrates

A historical graphic novel that examines the events leading up to the trial and execution of Socrates in ancient Athens. In this scene, the leader of the Thirty Tyrants condemns one of its own members to die, but Socrates tries to stop it.

Here's the finished page of Socrates' entrance! The earlier pages in the scene were pretty much taken from Xenophon's Hellenica but Socrates' entrance here is pure fiction. Hey -- it's a story about Socrates, right? Check it out and let me know what you think:

This is a scene that takes place in 404 BCE just after the Peloponnesian War has ended. Sparta installed an oligarchic government at Athens which severely restricted citizenship. Even this limited 3000 were controlled by thirty men who would come to be known as the Thirty Tyrants.

After Theramenes makes his speech criticizing the unofficial leader of the Thirty, he expects the other citizens to back him and curtail Critias' more vicious policies. Critias, however, makes his own speech and then calls in his Spartan guards to take over the Assembly. Theramenes is arrested and executed shortly thereafter.

This...is..soooo..amazaing!! I love it... So cool you showed us a sketch, it really helps for thinking process of how you drew the sketch...

And I'm just reading about the Punic wars, and there were even Greeks helping Carthage in the war, so this post reminded me of that...

Keep drawing, keep speaking your mind. It's awesome!

Much love, Luka.

Yes, Rome was a threat to every civilization on the Mediterranean at that time (the first Punic War took place about 150 years after Socrates' death). Plus southern Italy and Sicily had numerous Greek colonies that went back to the 5th century BCE (or perhaps longer).

Thanks for taking a look!

Good writing!
I notice a person added behind Socrates from the inked to the colored page, what was the reason for that? Important character, or simply compositional?

Thanks!

Important character. That's Aristocles, later known as Plato. He's the guy that actually tried to get Socrates to show up and stop Critias - which the reader will see in earlier pages. But since the artist hadn't done the earlier pages yet, he didn't realize that it would be necessary to show him enter the scene here with Socrates.

Another beautifully done piece @jpgaltmiller. The expressions and body language are great - very vivid! How long do you reckon it will take to complete this project? (I kind of want to read it once off in its entirety :))

Well, that is the question. I'm hoping to have this first volume/chapter done by the summer. This will be part one of three though for the completed graphic novel. So the full book will take some time. Thanks for reading!

Your pieces are beautiful @jpgaltmiller, even if I prefer Lesbian Zombies from Outer Space.
For obvious reasons! ✌️
Take care,
