It was winter. XiaoE’s fiancé got sicker. XiaoE went to the town buy medicine again. The pharmacist, BaoZhang, didn’t talk much this time. When XiaoE were leaving, BaoZhang told her, the new government was newly founded. The new government declared child bride was illegal and should be revoked. Therefore, XiaoE was free to abandon the present sick fiancé and marry anybody else.

又该抓药了。进入冬天，外面已经结霜了。长生咳的厉害，就越发粘人了，一直抱着小娥不肯放。小娥好说歹说，过了晌午才把长生交给婆婆，赶紧去集市里抓药。

这次宝樟没有打趣小娥，说话还吞吞吐吐的，反而让小娥有点意外。

小娥拿好了药正往外走，宝樟突然说话了，外面的天快要下雪了，我也要打烊了，正好送你一段吧。

两人一前一后走在路上，尴尬无语。走到半路，宝樟才憋出话来，“小娥，你知道吗，换朝代了，不叫民国了。新政府说，婚姻自由，童养媳是违法的。所有的童养媳都被送回娘家了。我已经听说有几个童养媳都回娘家了。”

小娥头皮突然一紧，小心脏开始狂跳不止。她不知道该如何应对这突如其来的震惊。她不懂什么叫婚姻自由，从来没有想过自己还会被休掉送回娘家，更不知道真的被休掉之后还能回到哪里。早上长生还和她粘在一起，怎么现在就要休掉我了呢？

小娥终于忍不住了，眼泪夺眶而出，抽泣着往家里跑。

宝樟拉不住小娥，望着小娥的背影，大声的喊：“你真的可以甩掉那个痨病老公啦！”
