City of God - 12 years ago, Fernando Meirelles' film adapted the book by Paulo Lins.

Before premiering commercially in the country of origin, the work went through Cannes in the Un Certain Regard Show, did not win awards, but left there acclaimed by the public and critics. And deservedly so. From 2002 to 2003 it was imagined that the film could be Brazil's nominee for Oscar nominations, but the work was not recommended by the Ministry of Culture that year. But realizing the quality of the show, American producers have bought their rights to show and planned their campaign in the US.

Under Oscar rules, any movie that premieres exclusively in theaters, in regular sessions and for a full week, between January 1 and December 31 of the current year, is eligible to run the nominations for the award. Cidade de Deus, a 2002 film, debuted in the US on January 17, 2003 in regular sessions, and would be eligible to compete. No sooner said than done. When Oscar nominations came out in 2004, there was the film with its portentous four nominations: director (Fernando Meirelles), Adapted Screenplay (Bráulio Mantovani), Editing (Daniel Rezende) and Photography (César Charlone).

And yes, the nominations have already been a victory. My relationship with the national film masterpiece began just over 10 years ago. I received an invitation to check out the film in a pre-closed movie at North Shopping, about two weeks before the commercial release of the movie here. Introducing Cidade de Deus, its director, Fernando Meirelles, who talked about the process of making the film recruited young talents from the community, and his expectation of the coming debut in Brazil, and the actor who makes Buscapé, Alexandre Rodrigues, who spoke as his character: "cool to damn" and amended a "I hope you like it, if you like to talk to everyone, if you do not like it do not tell anyone" ... After the movie ended, I was frozen, paralyzed in the chair, of so impacted with the work that was very well in the act of uniting the art of telling a good story with its clear techniques, clashing with perfection.

I'm not tired of seeing, reviewing, and it's one of the 10 best movies of all time for me. There is no such thing as a national movie, it's a movie and that's it. In the same list with the best. And if you, who are reading this text, have not yet seen this masterpiece that is City of God, do not waste any more time.

CITY OF GOD - ITS ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION

PRELIMINARIES - After almost half a century of its creation, the City of God is still confused with the false image of a favela and not of a neighborhood inserted in the urban mesh of the context of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
In order to definitively correct this distortion and resolve the great injustice that has been done to its residents for more than two decades, through the newscasts that portray the occurrences of crime in our city and, accentuated by the presentation of the movie "City of God" in 2002, a film of great national and international repercussion that stigmatized in an almost irreversible way its population made up of humble and hardworking people. At this time when the Federal, State and Municipal authorities are finally focused on supporting the development of that community, I feel obliged to give my testimony, this time in writing, about the true history of how, when and why the " City of God "was idealized and built.
As head of the team of architects who designed the new neighborhood in 1964 (Head of the Projects Section of COHAB GB - Guanabara State Housing Company, responsible for the implementation of the bold State Housing Program.

The city of Rio de Janeiro during this period was undergoing a great political-institutional transformation, not only provoked by the transfer of the capital of the country to Brasília at the beginning of the 60's, but especially by the bold administration that had been developed , in all sectors of city life, by the then Governor Carlos Lacerda, journalist and politician, whose ideas had great national repercussion.
For many years as the capital of the country, Rio de Janeiro had undergone a strong population growth, mainly due to the immigration of families who moved from all parts of Brazil, seeking jobs and better living conditions. The responsible institutions of the time were not able to provide the city with the necessary infra-structure to absorb this great influx of population, causing, among other problems, an aggressive and irregular occupation of the urban land, especially of the slopes and the vacant areas along the banks of the transport corridors. Thousands of sub-estates were built, which became urban clusters, without the minimum basic sanitation and urban services, denominated in the popular language of favelas. This adverse situation, added to other deficiencies in urban services and equipment, has become one of the major demands of the population with the State Government, leading its holder to address these problems with seriousness and determination, creating among other institutions CODESCO to deal with favelas susceptible of urbanization and COHAB GB, for the construction of housing nuclei of social interest, able to shelter the families in need of ceiling, especially those, that would be withdrawn from the selected areas to be vacated. Thus, by a decree published in December 1962, with the creation of the Popular Housing Company of the state of Guanabara (COHAB GB), it was possible to set off an intense program of production of popular houses, which began with the construction of Vila Aliança.
