How to keep you eyes healthy in 21st century

in #chrome6 years ago

The more technology advances, the more we stare at screens - computer, tablet, smartphone, iPod, even you car most likely has a good size screen. For nearly all of us, picking up our phone is the first thing we do immediately after waking up. Oh yeah, we also go to bed with our phones.

This is only the beginning. Once we sit behind the desk, as most of the work nowadays is intellectual, we work at least 8-9 hours by looking at one or more screens.

In other words, nothing positive will come from putting such pressure on one of the most precious organs we humans have.

To prevent any future health-wise problems with our eyes, here are 2 easy things that you can do.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that in order our eyes to relax, we need to:

  • look away from the screen
  • look at the blue sky
  • look at the something green (grass, tree, etc...)

Although this advice seems reasonable enough it is far from the being truth. Our eyes relax only when closed. Nothing else help them recover from the continuous exposure to screen. Here is the first actionable advice

  1. Every hour you spend working, take a break for just 1 minute (literally... only 60 seconds) and close your eyes.

The screens we are looking at nowadays improved tremendously and they are safer for us than ever, but it is not enough. Here is what you need to do

  1. Change your laptop/phone settings and install additional software
  • Turn on Night Shift on your laptop and smartphone. If you are not a designer that needs to see the proper colors on your screen, than you can keep it constantly on. Otherwise turn it on when your are in a low-light environment
  • Install browser extension that enables night mode on any website while you browse the internet. Night Eye for Google Chrome works like magic. You install it once and forget about it.
