Unlocking the Power of Chrome: Special Edition 2
If you haven't been following me, I have made it my mission to bring you cool tools and tricks that allow you to unlock the power of the Chrome browser. This typically takes the form of my every-other-day series highlighting a different Chrome extension.
Occasionally, I find something else about Chrome that I feel is important enough to bring to you in a special edition. The first special edition covered the fact that Chrome has a built-in task manager, allowing you to see which tabs were using the most resources. This is a handy tool if you have limited resources available on your machine or you typically have many tabs open at one time.
Muting Tabs
The topic of today's special edition was brought to my attention when I saw this article. Chrome has many "hidden" menus that can be accessed by typing chrome://"menu-name-here" in the browser url bar.
The setting we are interested in today can be found here: chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting. If you enable this setting tabs that pay audio will have a small speaker show up in the tab next to the name. You can click on the speaker to mute the audio in specific tabs. This is great if the site you are visiting has autoplay turned on for some video advertisement.
You will also notice there are many other options available on the page. My best advice is to use caution when messing around in the "secret" Chrome menus. While most things can be undone by a reset of Chrome, it is better not to change settings if you aren't sure what they will do.

Hey @bozz! I think adblocker would be a good extension for folks to consider adding to Chrome... if they don't care for ads and commercials! Here is a Youtube tutorial I made for it about two years ago. Just an idea for a future post in unlocking the power of Chrome series!

I totally understand you. There are some bad ones out there and it can be a real turn-off to a lot of users. I actually have one that I was just about to cover that I had to remove the other day because I realized it was hijacking my search results in Google. That's the great thing about them, if you don't like it, just remove it. I also am trying to only highlight safe ones to help other avoid the headaches of dealing with a shady one.
Sounds like the Bozz is taking care of Business! I appreciate that approach and I am sure it has been a safer way to explore for those following your lead.
