John 14:23-24

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

At a functional level, individuals who are battling with their assurance of salvation regularly approach me and ask, "How might I know I am saved?" accordingly, I put forth three inquiry measures or questions to them.

To start with I ask, "Do you love Christ Jesus splendidly?" Some individual to whom I have made that inquiry from has reacted openly, "No, I don't." That's the reason they don't know of the condition of their spirits and souls; they know there are inadequacies in their fondness for Christ, since they realize that on the off chance that they cherished and love Christ flawlessly, they would obey Him perfectly. Jesus stated, "In the event that you love me, you will keep my edicts" (see John 14:15). So when we resist one of His decrees, that is a flag to us that we don't love Him consummately.

Second, when a man recognizes that he doesn't love Jesus completely, I ask, "Do you love Him as much as you should?" The individual for the most part gives me an abnormal look and says, "Well, no, obviously, I don't." That's correct; if the response to the primary or first question is no, the response to the second inquiry must be no, in light of the fact that we should love Him splendidly and perfectly, however we don't. In that lies the strain that we encounter about our salvation.

Third, I ask, "Well, do you love Jesus by any stretch of the imagination?" Before the individual answers, I generally include that I'm approaching about his affection for the scriptural Christ, the Christ whom we experience in the pages of Holy Scripture. For what reason do I say that?
