DTube #4: How do Fireworks Work?

in #chemistry7 years ago (edited)

Firework displays can be truly magnificent. They light up dull, dark landscapes with bursts of colours and patterns. Around the world, special occasions are celebrated by putting on a firework display. On a fundamental level, how can these fireworks produce various colours and patterns?

Conclusion of the Video

Fireworks take advantage of chain reactions. Once they are ignited, different materials burn, in order, to cause the firework to take flight, explode and produce the specific colours and patterns desired. The colours are a result of the burning of different metals; for example, burning Copper gives a blue colour and burning Lithium gives a red colour. Manufacturing little stars of these metals, as mentioned in the video, and causing them to burn in order, results in the patterns or starburst explosions!
