#Charity: ACSA donates R280 000 to local rural school in South Africa

in #charity6 years ago

YESTERDAY will go down as one of the days in my life which I will remember probably for forever.

In South Africa, so many students take educational institutions for granted and so often, headlines in news reports read along the lines of: 'Students torch school'.

With unemployment at an astounding high, and jobs becoming scarcer by the day, students often forget that without a quality education and without effort being placed into their studies, these hard-earned jobs will continue to elude them once they have completed their studies.

It is as the late President of South Africa once said: 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.'

Every once in a while, I in my capacity as a journalist am invited to schools to cover news related events and these can include the appointing of a new principal, sports events and then, charity events.

More often than not, students at some schools have no discipline and for lack of better words are down right plain old rude and immature but not at the school I visited yesterday.

Mtwalume Primary School, situated on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa just so happens to be one of the most astounding schools I have ever been to.

Tragically, this is a school which has quite literally been forgotten by government's Department of Education and all efforts to keep the school financially afloat are made by the school's principal and teachers.

Yesterday, the school was visited by the Airports Company South Africa, who donated 42 tablets and a laptop to the value of R282 000 to aid in educating learners since textbooks are so difficult to come by.

The best part is that these tablets can continuously be updated with the latest study material available and also makes studying more fun.

To show their thanks, students performed traditional dance displays of appreciation, below are some of the shots taken.

Astoundingly, something which also does not happen at many schools nowadays, students opened the meeting in prayer. Have a look at the adorable moment below.

Needless to say, we were also so refreshed to find students and teachers alike so amazing - the social integration between students and teachers was something to see. The level of discipline and respect toward each other - a person cannot put this into words and yet, this is where everything starts. This is how children are prepared for the next step in their schooling careers.

The donation by ACSA was initiated some two years ago, when the company's public relations officer was tasked with locating a school completely worthy of the donation and sadly, she almost failed in doing so - out of all of the schools in our province (and there are 6 264 schools) only two were chosen for the donation.
