Loneliness is a psychological state of mind or feeling of isolation, separation, abandonment, being all alone, or a solitary state. It is referred to as a feeling because loneliness may not necessarily mean the absence of people around. It can be as a result of what the society presents to someone or it could sometimes be self-inflicted or self-imposed. This means some people either intentionally or unintentionally put themselves in a lonely state because of inferiority complex, the thought of not being good enough, or when they are trying to be perfect. Loneliness is bad in that it could lead to depression, from which sicknesses like stroke can develop. Depression also can lead to thoughts of suicide. This is why loneliness must be dealt with, no matter how much it has gotten root in a man’s life. Here are some of the best practices to overcome loneliness.

Mental adjustment: Positive thinking

This is one of the most vital approaches to overcoming loneliness. A person who is suffering from inferiority complex needs a mental adjustment. That one needs to concentrate on his strengths rather than on weaknesses. He needs to stop using other people as his standard for life. Each person is unique in some way, therefore, look out for your uniqueness and harness that strength to affect lives of others positively. Consistent failure at an endeavor could also lead someone into depression. Such a person should seek guidance from those who know better or are more experienced in that aspect of life. No matter what you are going through, maintaining a positive mindset is important in keeping you motivated and strong enough to face life.

Activity

Although loneliness does not necessarily mean being idle, it is still important that the mind be kept busy with other issues that take one away from the thoughts that bring separation, which tends to loneliness. Keeping the mind busy could be in form of getting a job, or doing a volunteer kind of job, doing some regular exercises, reading books, or even cooking – anything that keeps your mind busy and positive is fine.

Cheerfulness and Forgiveness

One of the major causes of isolation is when one keeps record of wrongs, rarely forgives others, or is easily angered. Keeping records of wrongs and hurts is harmful to the mind, causing a sore in it against the world. A person who is also easily provoked to anger will most likely drive away acquaintances who hope to become friends. It is therefore important to make intentional efforts to be cheerful and welcoming. Smile often, laugh at others jokes, and interact with them. You may hate parties, but once in a while, show up for some little gatherings of friends where a celebration is going on.

Loneliness should never be confused with gentleness. It is a state characterized by self-pity, general distrust, pride, isolation, etc. It is important to get out of this shell of loneliness by keeping a positive mindset, cheerfulness and being involved in active work and other such things.
