1959 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France
This August at Pebble Beach, Gooding & Company will auction this splendid 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France berlinetta with a coachwork by Scaglietti. No price yet, but each time, the auction are mad, last one was in London in 2012 through RM Sotheby's for £1,960,000.
History of the Ferrari 250 GT
The Ferrari 250 GT berlinetta got its nickname thanks to its domination of the Tour de France rally (sports car race in France regularly from 1899 to 1986), produced between 1956 and 1959. This 1959 berlinetta Tour de France model (chassis 0905 GT) is one of 36 single-louvre competition berlinetta in the world.
There were four series of 250 GT Berlinettas :
- Series I was presented in 1956 by Geneva Motor Show with no louvre (14 produced),
- Series II with louvre (9 produced),
- Series III was built in mid 1957 with 3 louvres and covered headlights (18 produced),
- Series IV (36 produced) with covered headlights and a single louvre.
To see the difference between the models :
Series I with no louvre
Series IV
This car raced at the 1958 Targa Florio and at the XVIII Trieste-Opicina hillclimb. In 1962, the Ferrari was bought in United States.
Technical specification
The Ferrari 250 GT berlinetta has an engine equipped with competition camshafts tipo 130 and high-compression pistons delivering 258.2 hp at 7.200 rpm. The transmission was also a competition ribbed gearbox.
Recently, the car was completely restored to its original livery of metallic grey over a light grey interior. Another true beauty with its leather strap for the hood (I like this detail).
