1953 Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta

in #cars6 years ago

In the upcoming RM Sotheby's auction, this 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta with a coachwork by Pinin Farina might be the coolest ride to buy despite other great auctions like 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II. This is one of just 31 250 MMs produced.

History of the Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta

In 1952, Enzo Ferrari decided to developp a smaller and lighter engine, the Colombo short-block V12 engine. The 3 liter 250 cc per cylinder would soon power all the GT models, until the 250 GTO. The same year, a berlinetta coachwork by Vignale with this motor won the Mille Miglia.

At the Paris Salon, Ferrari presented a new sports-racing model, the 250 Mille Miglia or ** 250 MM**. Only 31 examples were produced, 18 cars with a coachwork by Pinin Farina and the others by Vignale. The 250 MM was an immediate success for the clientele but also on race tracks (Pebble Beach Road Races 1953, Santa Barbara Trophy 1953, Monza GP in June 1953, 2nd-place at the Buenos Aires 1000 KM in January 1954...).

With its Colombo short-block V12 engine, on the Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta, the suspensions have been improved with the addition of Houdaille shock absorbers. Although the gearbox only has four synchronized gears, the vehicle was easier to drive.

First, this model is the 15th of 18 Pinin Farina berlinetta finished in gregio perla with the interior in beige vinyl. But later, it was repainted in dark blue. This is a beautifully maintained and sparingly driven example of a classic sports-racing model.

Now that's a mad little machine my friend, I would think the starting bid will be pretty scary, cheers.

In auction in 2005, a 250 MM was sold for $US 1,430,000. So today, it'll surely go north of that price.
