Oxford Launching New Multi Million-dollar Cannabis Research Program

in #cannabis7 years ago (edited)

Oxford University is set to go ahead with launching its new medical cannabis research program.

The hope is that the program is going to provide more insight into developing new therapies with cannabis that might be able to alleviate symptoms for those suffering with chronic medical conditions.

They are looking to spend at least £10m on the project, £10m is just the initial investment to get the ball rolling. Aside from their initiative to move forward with new research in this area, there are many universities around the world too which have already forged ahead as well in studying cannabis.

However, researchers say that there is still a lot to learn and plenty of untapped potential waiting to be realized.

At the moment, cannabis still isn't legal in the UK despite growing support for it not only there but in many other areas around the world as well.

There are a growing number of individuals who see the right to use cannabis as an extension of someone's natural rights, that they deserve to decide what they put into their own body. And the more that lawmakers and law enforcers try to resist and push-back against the will of the people in this matter, then the more it is going to likely prompt some folks to lose faith in the justice system itself.

There have been increasing demands in the UK for legalization and some MPs have even tried to urge the government there to change its mind on the matter so that at the very least, doctors would be able to prescribe it to someone who might need it for pain, anxiety, or some other issue.

The UK government still affirms that the drug is “harmful” and that's their reasoning for not budging yet.

The new research program is going to be specifically focusing on the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Past research into this area has shown that the ECS acts as a natural regulator that is able to help the body to relax, sleep, eat, forget, and protect. These receptors are also widespread within our body; closely related to the central nervous system. Those receptors get activated whenever an individual consumes cannabis and it in-turn inhibits the release of neurotransmitters which are active in pain perception, nausea, muscle spasms, and other symptoms.

There is still plenty to learn about cannabis and the potential that it might provide for remedy associated with a variety of health issues and symptoms.

The Oxford University study is expected to be funded through Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies (OCT) which is the school's new biopharmaceutical firm. They will also be partnering with a private equity firm, known as Kingsley Capital Partners.
