FDA Crackdown on Amygdalin

in #cancer7 years ago (edited)

The Hunzakut

The Hunza region is an isolated and inaccessible valley in the Himalayas where the borders of Pakistan, India, Kashmir, and China adjoin – it is currently controlled by the Pakistani government (1). There, resides a small society of about 40,000 people called the Hunzakut (Hun-za-ka). They're known for their impressive longevity, general happiness and being cancer-free for over 900 years (1). This is due to their diet and other practices including; yogic exercises of deep breathing and relaxation, annual fasting, and several short meditative sessions throughout the day (2).

The Hunzakut diet consists mostly of raw or slightly steamed fruits and vegetables - the most common of which are potatoes, string beans, peas, leafy greens, squash, apples, pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, and blackberries(2). They also eat lots of walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, beechnuts, and plenty of apricot kernels(2).

Hunzakut do utilize animal proteins in the form of milk, cheeses, yogurt, and chicken, but eat very little actual meat (2). They make a bread called chapatti using barley, millet, buckwheat and wheat which is high in Vitamin E (2). Chapatti is believed to be the reason for Hunzakut males being quite prolific reproductively, with reports of them fathering children well into their 90s (1)(2).

The Hunzakut eat two meals a day, always with chapatti, as well as snacking on sometimes as many as 50 apricot kernels (2)(8). The apricot kernels are where they get loads of Vitamin B17, also called amygdalin (a-mig-da-lin). On average, the Hunzakut receive about 50-75 mg per day of amygdalin from their diet – in comparison, most Westerners are thought to ingest the same amount in maybe an entire year (2)(3)(4).

Amygdalin

The benefits of a diet high in amygdalin are also notable in wildlife (4). Ernst T. Krebs, a chemist who studied amygdalin and later patented a semi-synthetic concentrated version called laetrile (5), said that bears and gorillas in the wild do not develop cancer (4). He stated that gorillas get about 100 to 125 milligrams of amygdalin daily by eating wild berries and fruits, which are also eaten profusely by wild bears (4).

The amygdalin molecule, which is classified as a cyanogenic glycoside, can be broken down into four compounds - two of which are glucose, and one each of hydrogen cyanide and benzaldehyde (4)(5). This chemical makeup sounds scarier than it actually is. We all know what glucose is, sugar, a.k.a. cancer food - and hydrogen cyanide and benzaldehyde are both known cytotoxins, or cell killers.

Basically, the cancer cells detect the glucose in the amygdalin molecule, draw it to them, and are then destroyed once the cell killers are released inside them (4).

Timeline & FDA Crackdown

1830

Amygdalin was first isolated by Pierre-Jean Robiquet (who also discovered codeine) and Antoine Boutron-Charlard in France (5).

1845

Amygdalin was first used in Russia as a cancer treatment (5).

1920s

Amygdalin was first used in America as a cancer treatment (5).

1961

Ernst Krebs patented laetrile, a concentrated semi-synthetic clinical version of amygdalin (5).

1963

Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. opened a clinic called Oasis of Hope in Tijuana, Mexico and began administering laetrile as part of his cancer protocol. The clinic is still in operation today, ran by his son, Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Jr.

1977

FDA bans interstate shipments of laetrile causing 27 states to invoke the 10th Amendment and legalize the use of laetrile within those states (5).

1979

The U.S. Supreme Court unconstitutionally upheld the ban of interstate shipments of laetrile in United States v. Rutherford (9).

One district court has ruled that a cancer patient has a constitutional right to take laetrile (derived from apricot pits); the Supreme Court reversed on statutory grounds, never dealing with the constitutional argument.(7)

Legalities

When I first began writing this piece I had no intention of making it political. However, upon further research, I realized it is profoundly political because it is yet another example of a 10th Amendment violation by disregarding the states wishes to keep laetrile accessible to it's citizens. It is also a violation the 5th Amendment, particularly the due process clause, which states no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process. As Valarie Blake wrote in the American Medical Association's Journal of Ethics, regarding a U.S. Supreme Court case for the rights of terminally-ill patients to access and use experimental drugs in order to save their lives (10),

The three-judge panel pointed to a longstanding tradition in America of protecting a right to control one’s body, demonstrated in the right to self-defense and self-preservation (including an exception to violate some laws in order to preserve one’s life, for example to damage another’s property). And while there is no long-standing general duty to rescue or save another’s life, there is long-standing liability for interfering with an individual’s ability to save him- or herself.

The United States government does not posses the constitutional power to ban substances like laetrile, which has been shown to have a positive effect on cancer for over 150 years (3), because it is not a controlled substance. So, to get around that little hiccup, they just banned the interstate transport of it making it almost impossible for the majority of Americans to access (5)(6). It is still legal to ingest and posses, just not to transport across state lines or for a distributor to advertise its effectiveness as a cancer-remedy (6).

The FDA repeatedly used the same studies as justification for their actions against laetrile, all of which were inconceivably flawed (3); and which seems to always be the case in their quest to squash all nutritionally based non-conventional cancer treatments. It is important to note that laetrile was never meant to be a stand-alone treatment for cancer, and if used as such, will probably not be fully effective in eradication (3). But, when combined with other treatments such as the Cellect-Budwig Protocol, the Cesium Chloride Protocol, or the Gerson Therapy, it can be a powerful tool in the anti-cancer arsenal (3).

Hmm. Here's another take on amygdalin right here on the Steemit blockchain.

I read that, and I've read all the negativity about amygdalin, which is plentiful, as it is with almost all natural remedies/preventatives which remove the necessity of reliance on patented synthetic drugs.

There actually is plenty of evidence that laetrile does have a positive effect on cancer when combined with other treatments. It is also known that getting laetrile via IV does not cause cyanide poisoning because it bypasses the GI system, and is less toxic than chemo, as I pointed out in a comment above.

However, the point of this article is to highlight how, regardless of how you feel about amygdalin, it is not the job of our federal government to decide what natural substances we can and cannot ingest - I feel the same about marijuana, and all the natural hallucinogens like mushrooms and peyote. In my opinion, people need to have the right and discernment to decide what is best for them individually - an no one will ever convince me that the federal crusade against laetrile has been fueled by their concern for our well-being.

Thank you for your comment and dropping a relevant Steemit link!

it is not the job of our federal government to decide what natural substances we can and cannot ingest

I agree with you in that regard.

Nonetheless, I have to default to skepticism whenever I encounter supposed miracle cures. And this one, ingested orally, seems particularly potentially dangerous.

I don't believe I insinuated it was a "miracle cure", not even close.

And I personally see nothing wrong with people being informed of possible preventatives, as I hardly believe that eating the seeds of the fruit you're eating normally is going to be harmful - nor do I believe that eating apricot or bitter almond kernels (which are eaten all over the world) is dangerous in sensible quantities. We evolved eating those seeds.

Anything consumed in excess is no bueno. A good example of that would be refined sugar - we all know the dangers of consuming it in large quantities (and more research is consistently showing this to be true), but it's still acceptable for individuals to do so.

Also, I personally believe that one's view on a substance being "dangerous" changes drastically when they're actually facing cancer head-on. Chemo is dangerous, radiation therapy is dangerous, even surgical procedures are dangerous. And people have the right to know that there are alternative options and clinics in other parts of the world where they can go to explore those options.

This was very well written! Thanks for sharing the article. I have a lot to learn from you. :)

I seek simple solutions without complicating my daily diet or spending money on "supplements" or "vitamins." My objective is to eat the food that is my medicine.

Therefore, knowing what you know, what is the easiest way? I simply eat a lot of fruit a day, and focus on specific fruit that is higher in B17?

Dr. Gregor from Nutritional Facts on YT has been covering fungi (yeast) lately in regards to cancer too. Basically, they help. Fruit has natural yeast on it as well. We eat the fruit, and the yeast on it helps keep our body free from disease.

Thanks, @finnian for the compliments and support! And yes, as far as prevention goes, eating fruits (and their seeds!) highest in B17 would be very helpful. These fruits need to be non-GMO, however, because the modified ones have all but been stripped of their amygdalin. Highest values will come from pretty much all non-GMO fruits including berries, but excluding citrus, where it is not found at all. If you make smoothies in a blender it is very easy to digest the seeds without feeling weird about actually eating them - instead of chopping off the flesh of the fruit just blend the whole thing.

Bitter almonds (not the ones in grocery stores - they are sweet almonds) and apricot kernels contain the highest amount of amygdalin. Unfortunately, they are not very palatable or ease to source, and would only be feasible to eat if you truly had cancer - unless you just love the bitterness.

But numerous studies and practice through the decades all have one thing in common as far as alternative cancer treatment goes --- and I'm sure this holds true for prevention too --- a raw vegan diet. As I'm typing this, I feel hypocritical in saying that, because I am not vegan LOL, but that is what the research shows.

It is also known that keeping your body slightly alkaline (7.3-7.5) will keep disease and sickness away, as cancer cells, bad bacteria, bad fungi (but mushrooms, and some yeast are very healthy as you pointed out above), viruses are all anaerobic and will die off from higher blood oxygen levels. This can be achieved by drinking alkaline water, adding a bit of baking soda to one glass of water a day, being very physically active - and eating less of acidic meat, animal products, coffee, alcohol, all the yummy stuff, haha.

Also, more and more research is coming out showing how important trace minerals are for cancer treatment (selenium, zinc, magnesium, idoine) - so I have been drinking a tsp. of pink Himalayan sole in a glass of water a day - it provides over 84 minerals in decent concentrations, and can be made at home. The reason it is important to supplement minerals is because the soil in commercial agriculture is not as rich in trace minerals as it used to be, so our produce has much less of them than they should.

Another good piece of knowledge, pertaining to our prepping conversation the other day, is to keep potassium iodine (KI) around because it can prevent thyroid cancer and many other ails which result from a radioactive situation. Here is a NCBI study explaining the specifics, but it is used for medical and military personnel who are exposed to high levels of radiation with excellent results.

My favorite hobby is learning about herbalism and naturopathy, so there will be many more articles like this is the future!

Thanks and I look forward to the results of your research. The KI pills are a scam by the way. Whether it is a failed nuclear power plant or a nuclear blast, there will be other radioactive isotopes present other than the Iodine 131. The pills won't keep people alive. :)

Good to know, never know if you can trust the NCBI!

I've done pretty extensive research on the topic because I plan to survive. :)

Yes, you have quite a bit of knowledge to share too - looking forward to it!

I was thinking about this over the weekend - what is odd is that thyroid cancer is almost 100% curable with I-131 - the patients actually drink it - and it is a scary-looking lime green radioactive substance. But, people get torn up over someone wanting to use a concentrated substance from seeds to treat cancer, because it may be dangerous?

I used to work as a nursing assistant at the Markey Cancer Center at the University of KY, where Dr. Ain practices, and is notoriously the best thyroid oncologist in the nation. He cured my 17 yo cousin of thyroid cancer this way (over 8 years ago)- surgery, drinking I-131, and small amounts of chemo.

I guess it works because it effectively kills the thyroid entirely? I'm not sure on that, but I think it's odd that the one treatment which works so well on thyroid cancer, is also the isotope which causes thyroid cancer and malfunction after radioactive events.

I had the 131 pill to kill my over active thyroid. They told me the people who take the pill actually have less chance of getting cancer than those who do not. That's probably garbage of course, but who knows for sure.

The pill I took was in a thick lead case, and the person who opened the case was wearing a full hazmat and lead protective suit. I was standing in the room with nothing on, and I picked up the pill and ate it. LOL My pee was pretty green for a day or so too.

What really bugs me is that my thyroid probably would not have gone nuts if it were not for my terrible diet of tons of table sugar at the time. I was shocking my system badly, and a proper diet at the time probably would have avoided the Grave's Disease in the first place.

B17 or amygdalin is only present in seeds such as apricot seeds. It is also present in apple seeds and a few other fruit seeds.

You have to be very careful when eating these seeds with amygdalin because it is a form of cyanide. You can actually die from eating too much of these seeds. The best way to take it is to cook it to weaken the poison and for better digesting it.

I once ate a handful of apricot seeds and it put me in a coma. I couldn't figure out what was going on until I remember the cyanide in it.

Different apricot from different region have different concentration of cyanide in their seeds. So don't think a handful is a safe measurement just because I didn't die from it.

This article and the conversation from it made me think about apple seeds in particular. Does a horse eat the whole apple and spit out the seeds? If you gave a gorilla an apple, would she not eat the core?

We've been programmed to believe the strangest things. It makes me wonder if eating an apple a day, seeds and all, would actually be as dangerous as we've been led to think. I mean... I know as a kid I probably ate some seeds.

Another angle to this is that I figured apple seeds would be like other seeds, and they will just pass right through our system like a peanut. If you're not crushing the seed up or cooking it, I don't see a problem. But then do we benefit from it then either?

I saw a video once on YT of a guy making cider from apples, and it involves cooking at high temperatures. He was not removing the apple cores, and there were hundreds of them in a batch. I asked about the cores, and he got upset at my question.

Surely having that many seeds in a drink that has been cooked at high temps would draw out some of the poison, right?

If you want something that is better than any thing to treat cancer and preventive care is Vitamin D. Vitamin D activates GcMAF. If you get enough sunshine then you will be cancer free and stay healthy.

We need to protect our rights to natural medicine such as herbs or vitamins. Codex Ailmentarius is a new international law that certain groups are trying to pass that makes it illegal to have access to Vitamins (at medical dosages) and herbs.

Codex Ailmentarius has passed in Europe but hasn't pass in USA. We need to fight this all the way.

I recommend that you join Alliance for Natural Health because this group is fighting the war such as Codex Ailmentarius. They are active in lobbying laws in Congress to protect us.

We need simple ways to add those plants to our daily diet though. Recommendations are welcome. I already make a point to consume the following:

Turmeric
Garlic
Saffron
Ginkgo
Ginseng

I also drink a cup of organic tomato juice a day. Honey is used for a sweetener as well. Avoiding caffeine has been nearly impossible, so I drink less than 8 ounces a day to keep the withdraw headaches away. My hope is that the tiny amount of coffee should not be doing too much damage to me.

I usually walk to work to get that exercise and the sunlight. I'm looking at ways to get more Vitamin D3 from food sources too, not supplements. Suggestions there would also be welcomed.

I personally agree that we've been programmed to think certain things for certain reasons.

Remember when peanut butter could give you cancer and eggs could give you heart disease? And when margarine was way healthier than butter?

Now we know that margarine is anything but safe and healthy, eggs actually lower cholesterol, and peanut butter is not a carcinogen.

It's better for the "system" if we're nutritionally ignorant.

My father's heart disease is directly linked to him eating margarine. I can't get him to stop eating it. He simply will not listen to me. The programming is strong. Thankfully, I didn't eat much of that garbage as a kid or adult, and I also avoid junk food that has similar substances in it.

All seeds have a protective layer that prevents the beneficial chemicals from being extracted from it. It is nature's way of preserving itself so therefore you have to grind it down and that's why you have molars.

Most seeds will pass through you and you will NOT benefit from it because of their protective shells. The apricot seed I ate are shelled, meaning it doesn't have the outer shell. That's why I recommend cooking the seeds but not too long. Cooking it actually neutralizes the poison and pulls out the chemical from it. Your digestive system includes breaking up food into smaller portions then the final stage is to absorb the micronutrients through your small intestines.

There are several questions I want to answer since I am a medical professional with at least 10 years of experience practicing professionally and I am a master herbalist with more than 10 years of experience because of my family using it. I used to also work at a cancer clinic.

I treat my patients with a combination of vitamin, herbs and other medical methods.

Appleseeds barely has any amygdalin in it and are not worth using if you are trying to treat diseases like cancer. As for prevention that is another story. For medicinal use, there is prevention dosages and treating dosages. Treating dosages is always much higher than prevention dosages.

I brew mead though, and I have friends like @mbrown121500 who brew cider. Some videos I've seen show people not taking the cores from apples, and I always wondered if it mattered. You're saying it does not then? Since you know a lot about the topic, I was curious to get your opinion.

If an animal eats an apple, they don't bother to take out the seeds. We should not have to do it either I would think. The impression I get is that the concern over the seeds has been blown out of proportion.

Eating the apple raw and swallowing seeds you do not crush up much is different from cooking cider to a high temp though with the seeds inside. What would your expert opinion then be on the matter? I appreciate your feedback and help!

There are many other herbs that is much better in treating cancer than Vitamin B17.

Also let me mention that cancer manifest differently and not ONE chemical can treat all cancer. Meaning that just because Vitamin B17 can treat one cancer, it can NOT treat another form of cancer. I found this out when I visited Dr. Burzynski clinic, which I recommend every person to visit. They have free tours for the cancer clinic.

I am not sure whether you are eating Ginkgo nut or the leaves. The nut are toxic and should not be eaten unless cooked or prepared correctly.

Gingko (nut or leaves) and any kind of Ginseng is not something I would recommend eaten daily.

There are also different kinds of Ginseng. The Chinese or Korean Ginseng can create hyperactivity if eaten too much or in the wrong season. You can actually feel super warm and uncomfortable. If you want to be safe just stick with American Ginseng but still in very small amounts if daily.

It is actual cyanide, which is why it is effective against cancer. You certainly shouldn't eat a "handful" of apricot kernels without ever eating them before - in the regions where they are eaten as food the people introduce them slowly to children so that their tolerance is built up over time. Also found in bitter almonds, which all of us have eaten at some point because anything "almond" flavored comes from bitter almonds, not the sweet ones, like almond extract, which is heavily used in baking.

It's also known that poisons, such as anthrax, can safely be ingested by those who micro-dose until their tolerance is higher than normal and the effects of the poison are of no consequence to them. And, no, I'm not advocating that anyone do this, I'm simply pointing out that it can be done, and is why some people can eat them and not get sick.

Before our produce was heavily genetically modified, amygdlin was also pretty prevalent in berries - wild blackberries, blueberries, raspberries - and as a hunter-gatherer species, we clearly have been eating them for as long as we've been here. It is also found in smaller ratios in raw cashews, macadamia nuts, walnuts, flax, and pecans.

Laetrile, when used as a cancer treatment, is infused via IV, bypassing the GI tract, where the poisoning occurs. It is a very similar concept to the cancer treatment of IPT (or Insulin Potentiation Therapy). With IPT the cancer cells are tricked into up-taking the "targeted chemo" by the insulin potentiate. So, in simpler terms, the cancer cells think they're getting a sugary snack because of the rush of insulin, so they open up all their little receptors, and the following chemo is sucked right in, avoiding normal healthy tissue - the cancer is killed and the patient has much fewer side effects than non-targeted chemo patients.

With IV Laetrile treatment, the cancer cells draw in the amygdalin because half of it's chemical makeup is glucose (cancer's sugary snack). The cancer releases beta-glucosidase to release the glucose for consumption, but in doing so it hydrolyzes the cyanide components, making them active. So, the cancer cell gets killed, and the patient has less side effects than a person taking normal chemo.

Wow this is a very informative good read @millennia! It's been a while since I last read a scientific article and I came across yours, which is very good one. I mean everyone is looking for a cure to cancer besides the usual chemo and radiotherapy which could be as deadly probably. The molecule composition itself is interesting. Will find out more on Amygdalin and read up your sources too. Thanks for highlighting this :)

Thank you for your very genuine comment @happycrazycon! Do read up on the pages listed under patient resources - so much useful information.

Yeah and you have conveniently linked them for me, so appreciate that :) I was a graduate from biotechnology though I'm not practicing it (become a mum at home) so this does interest me!

If a drug is helping cancer who has no hope of survival, why the ban? The ban is also weird and ridiculous. Ban on interstate transport of the drug but no problem in using it!! How funny!
By the way, from the chemical composition, it seems really toxic substance.

You are correct @hafiz, it is a really toxic substance, but so is receiving dozens of high-dosage chemotherapy and radiation sessions - even more so, really. Are there bans on those noxious synthetic drugs? No. The difference is that chemo and radiation do not differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells so you get very sick from systemic poisoning; because chemo is a poison. With laetrile, when administered via IV, it is really only toxic to the cancer cells. Patients will feel bad a little, but nothing unbearable.

There are people who take high doses of dried ginger, which acts as a chemotherapy, and they will have some of the same side effects of chemo like nausea, fatigue, even hair loss - but it still isn't as toxic as conventional treatment. Ginger is apparently very helpful, especially with ovarian cancer.

The point is that amygdalin is found within almost every fruit we eat, and honestly regardless of what their studies have shown, people are still curing themselves using amygdalin/laetrile along with other alternative cancer protocols. It is simply irrefutable. So, yes, why would there be any type of ban on it whatsoever?

These are the types of issues Americans and individual states need to think about. Are we going to let them do this to us repeatedly (for many decades), or are we going to utilize our Constitution which was written for moments exactly like this, when the federal government oversteps its bounds?

All these silly bans on "this-and-that blah blah blah" have got to go, the states just need to do it and be done. Best way to move forward is to absolve ourselves from it and make it irrelevant - luckily, the individual states constitutionally have that right!

Thanks for reading!

Well it is not a drug but a herbal medicine and since herbs is considered natural and God given, the pharmaceutical company can not patent Vitamin B17 thus making it unprofitable.

They have manipulated the FDA to ban B17 because it competes against their market of dangerous chemicals for chemotherapy. A very good read is by G. Edward Griffin "World Without Cancer" Here is a brief summary. http://www.vitaminb17.org/

The debate about vitamin B17 is ridiculous! This stuff is natural and very beneficial to humans in general. The more natural things we ingest the better. Stay away from processed foods!!

Yes!!! Thank you for your super profound words! This is so true!!!!
