Early spring in cactus collection

As soon as the night temperatures rise above 0°C, I place cactuses and succulents in the direct sun. It is important to adapt cactuses to the sun's rays, until they are still not strong.

Those who are less sensitive to water I put on the rain while the others are next to the house under the roof protection, so I water them. First watering should be careful, only a small amount of water should be given them, to keep the plants awake slowly. Gradually, the amount of water increases until they are ready to be watered well. Although they are very thirsty plants, it is important that their soil is completely dry before the next watering.

Every day I look at them to see if they all woke up after the winter, did the water shake the signs of life in them. If some respond to the sun with a red epidermis, I protect them temporary by a net.

First watering of seedlings are also started. Small bodies of last year's seedlings are now full of water and grow, although very slowly. Last year, besides the cactus, I have also saw a few species of Mesembs like Lithops, Faucaria, Dinteranthus, Lapidaria, Argyroderma.

Early bloomers like Titanopsis and some Crassulas are already showing their flowers. Titanopsis began first, still in the late winter. Many cactuses and other succulents are just starting to form buds.

I am fluttering around those who have not flowered yet, hoping that this year I will see their first buds coming out of their bodies. I'm happy with the discovery of each bud of each plant, but am especially looking forward to find buds on those plants which didn’t flowered yet. Then, I have the feeling that they show me their true face, their core.

Will this young Sulcorebutias show their flowers for the first time?

Titanopsis is very beautiful, I did not know him.
I started my collection just 2 years ago.
Here is my new sulcorebutia, will we see who will bloom first? haha

Wow! your S. rauschii is true beauty. Have you planted it in these dark red stones (tufa?) or they are here just for decoration?

I put gravel at the bottom, then a cactus substrate.
Above the pozzolana so that there is no moisture at the collar of the plant.

First years I have used almost the same recipe. Now I pick soil in woods that is 90% small blue, green stones. I have find one place nearby that has perfect soil for cacti. Than I mix it with little zeolit and lava or tufa.

How lucky ! Here the soils are clayey and hard, it stifles the roots, even for the vegetable garden, where one has to add sand, peat and potting soil!

Here is soil also heavy clay, but near in woods by one spring it is totally different. I was surprised also.

Very amazing

Thank you! Yes, they are amazing creatures.
